Does my baby have reflux?

help please. I have a very very unsettled 10 week old. He has cried while awake pretty much constantly since birth. I breast fed every 45 mins for first 5 week, gave up due to the demands of my other kids and mix fed and am now almost exclusively ff. He appears to be in constant pain and gets some relief from pressure on his tummy. He does throw up though not massively like some of the babies mentioned here. I have had 2 other kids so I know that they all are a little sick and tbh if that's all it was I wouldn't be here. It's more his distress that's making me think there's a feeding related problem. we've been through gaviscon which settled him a bit but led to constipation, carobel to alleviate constipation didn't do so and was less effective if anything. Tried sma staydown which stays down but doesn't improve his distress levels and am now going full circle back to gaviscon as it maybe treats the acid that I imagine is in his tummy. Awaiting ped appointment (6 Wks wait on Nhs here and 2 Wks privately) I'd just really like to know if I'm barking up the wrong tree. Symptoms include sticking Tongue out, white Tongue, grimacing, constant feeding to soothe himself I imagine leading to more weight gain than expected. Any ideas would be appreciated.

HappyHugs sorry to hear your DS is having a tough time (and you too!). It's difficult to say from what you have written whether this is reflux or not. There seem to be two kinds - 'normal' reflux which usually means lots of vomit, often projectile, which it doesn't sound like your DS has, and silent reflux, which is not really vomit, but is the acid coming up baby's throat and burning, which is what my DD has. When DD has reflux episodes she is literally screaming in agony (not just a baby crying, but real purple face screaming) until it stops.

It's obviously impossible to say whether this is what your DS has, but if you feel he is that distressed, and don't feel you can wait the 6 weeks, I would try going to A&E. I did this with DD, got to see a paed that day and came out with a treatment plan etc. I am sure this is not the way the system is meant to work, but I also don't think that babies that are only a few weeks old should be left in that much distress and pain for so long.

FWIW, Infant Gaviscon isn't really an antacid, it's just a thickener so it is meant to stabilise the feed in the stomach and stop it coming back up, so does naff all for the actual acid.

ds had suspected reflux and we found seeing a paed hugely helpful - hope you do too.

When researching it I read a huge thread on here about reflux which I'm sure mentioned the tongue things as symptons here

Could he be intolerant to cows milk? Did he get worse on formula? It's worth asking for hypoallergenic formula to see if that helps.
