is a glass of wine a no-no when breast feeding?

Basically DH and I picked up the M&S meal deal that includes a bottle of white. Not sure if I can have a glass of wine as I've heard a few different things.

MIL says a unit leaves your system in an hour?

I've heard if you feed, then have the glass with a meal its fine and also its in your breast milk while its in your blood (so if you not feel tipsy it won't get to baby)

And slo heard you should just abstain. Do really fancy a glass but wouldn't be the end of the world (obviously) if it turned out to be a really bad idea.

I don't know anyone with a baby so I've no point of refernce! Any advice would be great, thank you!

have a glass and enjoy it. One glass won't be a problem at all Smile

It's fine :) Don't worry about it. Rule of thumb is, if you're sober enough to not drop the baby, you're sober enough to feed Wink

I had two last night Blush

what ilike and berti said.... a glass of wine is positively beneficial to bfing (alcohol relaxes you... a relaxed you produces more milk)

better to wait until baby is asleep then you can enjoy it more lol.

purcellfan · 12/05/2011 19:30

I hope it's fine as I had one today! Think so if you're not getting drunk etc as it's apparently only a smallish fraction amount of the alcohol that reaches the milk, not like in pregnancy where it's going through the placenta.

belgo · 12/05/2011 19:32

One glass is fine. I would drink it just after bfing.

TruthSweet · 12/05/2011 19:33

BluddyMoFo - not your imagination - it's documented that some babies dislike the taste of alcohol in bm.

Annpan88 - nothing wrong with a drink or two whilst bfing. Some women even bf whilst having a glass Grin. Some good info on bfing/alcohol here

Ace! [Wine] have one on me xx

I've heard that the best time for a glass of wine is while you're bfing as then you have the maximum amount of time for the alcohol to leave your system before the next feed. Grin

I agree with everyone else, it's fine- enjoy it!

belgo · 12/05/2011 19:38

Wine Grin

3rdnparty · 12/05/2011 19:42

I always waited til after a feed (not the morning oneGrin) and made sure I had big glass of water after as alcohol dehydrating....

YankNCock · 12/05/2011 19:42

what pozzled said.

All ok as long as you don't spill wine on the baby!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 12/05/2011 19:59

Bertiebotts, wish there was a "like" button Grin
I concur with everyone else. Wine is fine.

Apparantly I'm saved and quoted on Facebook, unfortunately I haven't saved this myself so have to write it each time...

The drink drive limit (in the UK) is 0.08% BAC. The BAC of blood is the same as BAC of milk.

Alcoholic coma sets in around 0.4% BAC and death occurs around 0.8%.

A full day over the drink drive limit would give a newborn baby a similar amount of alcohol to traditional gripe water. The drink drive limit is less ABV than orange juice!

NimpyWindowmash · 12/05/2011 20:18

I thought it was obligatory Wine

DialsMavis · 12/05/2011 21:59

DD wasn't keen on white wine for a while, but she is OK now. She doesn't mind cocktails either...

Bigglewinkle · 13/05/2011 01:47

My NCT class was told up to 5 glasses of wine over the evening is OK if you are bf'ing!! So I've never worried about having the odd glass or 2 - I'm agree with Nimpy, its practically obligatory after a hard day :)

PenguinArmy · 13/05/2011 02:56

up to 5 glasses of wine Shock I'd be floored

cocoachannel · 13/05/2011 08:03

Me too Penguin! Had two glasses on Sunday night with a lovely meal DH cooked. Promptly fell asleep, which I'm not sure was DH's plan!
