Hey, wonder if you'd all humour me and answer a few questions please....

Baby boy or girl?

Breast/formula/mixed fed?

How much did s/he weigh at birth?

How much did they weigh at 3 months?

Many thanks

2 DDs

Both BF

At birth DD1 7lb 8oz, DD2 8lb 15oz

At 3 mo DD1 13lb ish, DD2 is only 9 weeks and was 14lb when I had her weighed last week.

What's this all about then?

TruthSweet · 01/05/2011 21:04

DD1 FF/BF until 8 weeks then EBF

7lb 12oz / 3.52kg / 50th%ile at birth

10lb 2.5oz / 4.59kg / 2nd%ile at 3m/13w (had reflux though and was only just starting to be treated).

DD2 EBF

7lb 6oz / 3.36kg / just under 50%ile at birth

11lb 1.5oz / 5.04Kg / 9th%ile at 3m/13w (no health issues just liked the 9th%ile until she was about 9m when she started to go to 25th%ile).

DD3 EBF

8lb 10oz / 3.91kg / just under 91st%ile at birth

12lb 3oz / 5.54kg / 25th%ile (had RSV/Bronchiolitis)

Not info you asked for but DD1 is now 5y/o and is 75th%ile for height & 50th%ile for weight, DD2 is 3.5y/o and is over 91st%ile for height and 50th%ile for weight, DD3 is 18m and is 9th%ile for height and just under 25th%ile for weight. Their weight at birth/3m hasn't really determined their weight when they were older.

DS, breastfed

Birth - 3.8kg/8lb 6oz

11 weeks - 5.6kg/12lb 5oz

mejon · 01/05/2011 21:18

DD2 - EBF for 5 weeks then mix-fed since then

7lb 2oz at birth

10lb 11oz at 12 weeks

Weight-gain very slow during first 5 weeks but still following the 2nd centile. Since adding formula feeds, she has moved up a line to the 9th.

DD1 was mix fed from 5 days old and her weight was similar to DD2 though slightly lighter at birth.

PenguinArmy · 02/05/2011 00:54

DD1 BF

6lbs 12.5oz at birth

9lbs 9oz at 3 months (and that was the period of best weight gain)

Tarlia · 02/05/2011 09:48

Thank you ladies.

I had pre-eclampsia, was induced at 37 +5 and expected a bigger baby so expect he has caught up a bit on the stunting in the womb he has put on 4kg since birth.

Ds - Ebf (on demand)- 3015g at birth, 7kg at 11+6

My MIL has gone from saying he is so starving in his early days to now, you are feeding him too much and making him fat. This is the woman that kept asking if I had enough milk at 1 day and at 3 weeks telling me my milk would run out by 4 months so would have to wean then - I don't "listen" and come back with facts but it all does knock confidence.

This is mixed with advice from the HV telling me to give him boiled water if he is searching for food before 3 hours are up, but all research I've done suggests otherwise. Arg.

You'll all probably giggle and I think I know the answer, but is he fat? Isn't he just a strong boy catching up and overtaking his peers on mummy's milk?! He has also grown 11cm since birth, so is set to be a tall boy like his dad, unlike the tiddler he was born.

No expert here but I cant believe what the HV says is true. Shocked actually, my DS (11 weeks) rarely goes 3 hours between feeds, babies will eat when hungry or thirsty surely. I've always read that you cant overfeed a bf baby! Dont listen to them. My DS was 8lb 7 at birth and at 5 weeks was 12lbs. dont know what he weighs now but has continued growing tall and big. He is ebf and lovely and chunky! All babies are different, you are not overfeeding him. Your MIL is crazy.

RitaMorgan · 02/05/2011 10:16

Mine didn't go 3 hours between feeds until he was on solids!

The WHO and NHS advise breastfeeding exclusively on demand until 6 months - maybe ask the HV why her advise is different?

websticks · 02/05/2011 10:21

Is the Fat? NO

My Ds was 9lb 14.5 oz at birth

EBF

and at 13 weeks weighed 20 lbs 13 oz so over 9kg

He is very long for his age to off the chart for both weight and length, my health visitor doesnt seem concerned at all.

I am still feeding on demand.

But i do get lots of comments from people about how big he is (which upsets me at times)

Moulesfrites · 02/05/2011 10:23

Well, you can relax, if your baby is fat then mine clearly has a problem too! He was 8lb 7 at birth and at 13 weeks was 16lb 10! He is ebf. I think rather than offering you advice that is clearly wrong your hv should be congratulating you on doing so well and overcoming your initial complications. Continue to feed on demand, would be my advice....

Tarlia · 02/05/2011 11:01

I love mn, always find good help/advice/reassurance - thank you.

To be fair to the HV, I'm not in the UK so guidelines are different here but very pro breast-feeding country. She didn't suggest I was over feeding him, on reflection I think she was trying to reassure me I was doing a good job and keep pnd at bay as I told her mil kept suggesting I was starving him. I was getting very sore due to poor latch and huge feeding marathons with no expert support.

I really wish there were lactation consultants, bf support groups and cafes over here!

DS was 4.0 kilos at birth and at 15 weeks was 7.7 kilos. He's a big boy! Everyone comments on it too but it doesn't upset me- I see it as praise for how well I'm feeding him Smile. he bf on demand with one formula bottle at night and never goes more than 2.5 hours. His big chubby thighs are just wonderful!

debka · 02/05/2011 11:15

Tarlia

Babies are all different, and grow at different rates.

DD2 was 4.7kg (10.6) at birth, on the 99th centile.

She was 5.35 kg (11.6) at 9 weeks, on the 50th centile.

She is healthy and happy and growing,

My friends baby is the opposite- he was born teeny and now is bigger than mine.

Both EBF.

bitingfairy · 02/05/2011 16:38

My DS was 8lb 5 at birth and at last weigh in at 7 1/2 weeks was already 13lb 14. Love those chubby babies :)

EauRouge · 02/05/2011 17:57

As everyone else has said, your MiL and HV are both wrong and you are doing a grand job Grin Can't believe how big these February babies are getting now!

Pootle78 · 02/05/2011 18:41

I have the opposite problem, DS was 8lb 9oz at birth and at 11 weeks weighed 11lb. The hv wasn't concerned although my mother, although not coming out and saying it directly, but passing comments, thinks i'm starving him!

He's had a 2 night stay in hospital and is on long term antibiotics plus he doesn't sleep more than 30 mins in a single go during the day so is awake and burning his calories (boy does he like to lay on his back and kick like a mad man!)

He has 3 expbm feeds and 2 ff in a day and if we try to increase his intake he just throws it back up, normally over me!

I'm sure if he was weighing 14/15lb I'd be accused of over feeding him - sometimes you just can't win!

KD0706 · 02/05/2011 21:09

We're slightly different because DD was 9 weeks prem, but she was 1.4 kilo at birth and 3.8 kilo at three months.

I definitely think just keep feeding on demand. Your DS will take what he needs. It sounds like you're doing a great job.

Oh, and DD was always on breast milk. Tube, then bottle then straight from source.

choccybox · 02/05/2011 21:38

EBF. Was nearly 18lbs at 3 months, having only been 7lbs at birth.

She was and is tall.
