BF & periods - now 10.5mths and nothing...

Is it normal not to have periods back again after 10.5 mths? DD is BF evenings, during the night (and feeds every 4 hrs at a minimum during the night) and has formula during the day.

Anyone I know in RL has periods back ages, but I don't know anyone who BF past 6 months.

Slightly concerned as I've also lost a lot of weight and that could also be the cause.

Well, it's normal for me. Got mine back at 15 months with DD, I think. DS is now 14 months and no sign of them yet - have just gone down to morning and night BFs (and a couple during the night).

I've also lost weight so maybe it's related. How are you feeling? Are you run down? Might be worth chatting to your GP to get some reassurance.

I bf to 22 months, periods returned at 6 months, but I found that they became irregular when DD was teething as she upped her night feeds. I lost all my baby weight through breast feeding, you need to eat little and often to keep up your energy levels and may even need to have a snack by your bed for the night time.

Got mine back at 19 months this last time. Just in time for Christmas wayfuckinghey

Sometimes you lose all your weight through bf, sometimes it's not until you stop.

My DD is 12mo and generally has four feeds a day. I've not had a period yet.

Thanks for the quick reply TheOldestCat - I just got a bit worried out of nowhere for some reason Blush

I'm a bit run down alright, but I think it's mostly exhaustion due to DD feeding half the night. I got some blood tests (because of the weight loss) a few months back that were fine. I thought that DD taking formula during the day would mean I'd start putting on weight - not yet, but at least it's stabilised.

Last 3 times mine all came back at 11-12 months which corresponded with them sleeping through the night.

Trillian42 · 27/04/2011 22:08

Lots of reassurance while I was typing a reply- thanks! Weight-loss is beyond my pre-PG weight -was 9-9.5 stone, now 7.75 so significant enough.

I don't miss the periods themselves - it's lovely not to have to deal with them but worried about a little brother or sister for DD at some stage in the future! (Not for a while yet though - will need to rebuild my sleep reserves before then Wink)

Same here, Trillian - I'm alright now, but with DD I got too thin and was quite ill, despite eating like a very hungry horse.

Strangely, the weight reappeared when I stopped BF and carried on with my cake habit. Grin I fully expect the same thing to happen when I stop with DS!

seriously though, the exhaustion's a killer isn't it? I found Floradix helped (it's a vitamin/iron supplement).

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 27/04/2011 22:09

I bf ds1 for 7 months, my periods restarted after 9 months.

I bf ds2 for 12 months, my periods restarted after 9 months!

No sense in that!

Good that your weight has stabilised op. Make sure you're eating enough extra calories to offset the bf and the extra running around you're no doubt doing. Did your blood tests check your thyroid function? It's quite common for that to go haywire postnatally.

pearlgirl · 27/04/2011 22:11

I am at 12months and still no sign. I think it was about 14months with ds1 and didn't have any periods between ds2 and ds3 (they are 21 months apart).

picklebum2011 · 27/04/2011 22:14

can i just high jack and ask is it normal to feel like you're going to come on and then not. My dd is still breast fed probably about 4-6 times in 24 hour period, had no period yet but feel really bloated and got crampy belly. Sorry for changing subject slightly Trillian :0. Figured it kind of linked with your thread.

picklebum2011 · 27/04/2011 22:15

oh forgot to say she's 9 mths

Trillian42 · 27/04/2011 22:39

Thyroid was checked alright- that and iron were the reason I was checked, but they did everything while they were at it. I'm just making sure I eat loads now.

Picklebum I've had exactly the same phantom cramps. I've even put a pad on a couple of times, I was so sure they were back.

Good to know it's all normal: no periods yet (DS is 1yo), lost loads of weight and having phantom cramps lately
