BF baby on amoxicillin - no dirty nappies since starting the course - is this normal?

5wk old DD in hospital over weekend with chest infection. She's OK but to be safe they kept her in overnight for observation, & then prescribed amoxicillin in case it's a bacterial infection. She started on the ABs yesterday, and has fed less for about 3 days (as frequently, but less milk I think).

So, some Q's if anyone can help:

  • Is it normal for ABs to cause constipation? She's not had a poo since 10am this morning (would normally have 3-4 during the day). Plenty of wee, but no poo!
  • Could my milk supply have been lessened by her illness, as she's not fed as much? I'm not having the wet t shirt experience I've had the last 5 weeks & my let down has become very painful but this could just be my supply settling down - surely I'm still producing enough milk??
  • She's really unsettled and unhappy today - constantly crying when she's not feeding, not sleeping - was also like this during the night. Could this be the ABs as well, or could she be hungry if I'm not producing enough milk?

Can anyone please help? Don't want to give her a bottle but worried.

My DD is currently struggling to poo and has tummy ache because I'm on ABs. Sad She wants to nurse more frequently because of this - doesn't understand that in our case it's making her worse!

Different situation but my little one is 6m old and has just come off a course of amoxycillin for an ear infection. He was really really miserable and unhappy too - I don't think it's the AB so much as being ill that caused it.

My DS pooed a lot more while on amoxycillin, three times a day at least. But he is older and on solids so I don't know if you can draw any comparisons. Best to speak to your GP if they do telephone consultations, they might be able to put your mind at rest.

If you are worried about supply, can you try expressing a bit to keep it up? I used a Philips Avent (express fed for 5.5months) which I thought was excellent. At five weeks, yes, your supply is not yet 100% established so if DD is not feeding as often your milk MAY start to lessen unless you keep it up through other means. Well, that's what I think, hopefully tiktok or someone more knowledgeable will be along in a bit......

Hope she feels better soon

Thanks both. We had a better night last night & she seems much better today, too - lots of poo! She's still in some discomfort though, & I do think that's down to the ABs. Am keeping fingers crossed my supply is ok as she's so much more settled & sleeping longer. Thanks again.
