Could I be away for a weekend without giving up bf?

I am looking at a course I am interested in which would require me to be away for a weekend once a month. DD would be about 9 months. I don't want to do it if I would have to stop feeding though. Could I express over a weekend at that stage do you think?

How old is your dd now?

I was away from my ds for about 36 hours when he was 6 months and still feeding about 6 times a day, and only managed to express twice and it was fine. He's only feeding 4 times a day now at 8 months, so I think if I was away for a weekend I'd probably only express 2-3 times day.

Hi - just wanted to add that I think it will be fine too. I have just come back from 3 days away with work, DD is 6 months old and all went well with pumping while away. My tips would be:

  • ask the course if they can arrange a private room for you so you are not lurking in the loos to pump! Or if your accomodation is nearby that is helpful for lunchbreaks.
  • remember a pump is not as effective as a baby, I was surprised by how 'full' I still felt after a pumping session. I felt much more comfortable if I also hand expressed (though I find this a bit messier!)
  • when you get back have a 'babymoon' and just feed as and when baby shows interest to make sure your milk is back on track, I found 2 days of frequent feeding and we were back to our old routine.

Definite yes from me. I left my DD aged 5 months for 2 nights with EBM (took ages to build up a bank before I went). Took my pump and expressed 5 times per 24 hrs (though I never felt quite as empty as when DD feeds) and all was fine. A word of warning though- she took 32 oz per 24 hrs. Luckily I had frozen 90 oz but I was expecting ger to only take 25 oz per day.

another yes I was away Thurs to Sat just as dd turned 6 months. I hand expressed about 5 times / 24 hours, although less on the day I came home due to travelling. I did have to give a couple of bottles until I'd built my supply back up but then she started solids which she took to quickly so maybe that helped. On the Friday - the only full day I was away I did manage to hand express just a couple of oz less than she had taken. unfortunately as I had no fridge it all went down the sink Sad.

Thanks. Sadly it looks like I can't do it afterall as I would need to go for an interview at the end of this month which is too soon to ba away as dd is only 10 weeks. Ah well, maybe next year.

Could you take DD and DH with you, then you would only need to be away from DD for the length of the interview?

Dh will need to stay with ds. It's in London and I live in Scotland. I am looking into it though, might be able to take her if a friend helps out.
