should I see a doctor this evening?

Am on antibiotics for mastitis. I've now been on them 24 hours with no improvement - thought I was feeling better this morning but my temperature with ibuprofen is now 39.9. Should I see a doctor this evening or should I wait until tomorrow to give more time for the antibiotics to kick in?

Don't want to cause unnecessary fuss, plus the thought of getting out of bed and sitting for hours in out of hours docs is just too grim for words.

What were you prescribed?

libelulle · 30/03/2011 19:08

erythromycin 4x a day - am allergic to penicillin.

I believe that the advice is to contact HCP again if prescribed abs and symptoms have not improved within 48 hours.

Erythromycin is correct. Do you have a 10 to 14 day course? If not, get more.

You also need rest. I think I would wait till the morning but if you feel at all worse, go to docs before then.

Get well soon.

Thanks Eachpeach. I do have 14 days. I'll see what the morning brings!

Do you have any camomile tea? It's a natural antipyretic so might help bring your temp down a bit. Also might relax you so you get a good night of sleep! Hope you feel better soon.

Ibuprofen won't reduce a fever, can you take paracetemol?

libelulle · 30/03/2011 21:21

really kirisox? Always works well with DD, maybe less so in adults? In any case will try doubling up with paracetamol.

Bubbley I'll send dh out to search for some - think friend down the road has a supply! I certainly need sleep - between DS's cough and me feeling awful I only managed about 3 hours last night.

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, paracetomol an analgesic. You need paracetomol or aspirin to reduce temperature.

Hope you're feeling better soon, I'm also allergic to penicillin and know how nasty the alternatives are

Eachpeach80 · 30/03/2011 22:04

Actually, ibuprofen should and does reduce temperature.
See here

it will also reduce inflammation so good for mastitis.

You can use them together if you need to.

Kirisox · 30/03/2011 22:10

Thanks Eachpeach, I didn't know that

libelulle · 31/03/2011 15:54

I was feeling a bit better this morning but went to gp anyway just to get checked over. She sent me straight to hospital and I saw a surgeon within 10 mins of arriving, who said I had an abcess. The ultrasound doctor said she thought it didn't need aspirating just yet and we'd watch and wait over the weekend. I have to be reassessed by them on Monday and need to head straight to A&E over weekend if things get any worse.

Moral of story is not to muck around with mastitis and see a doctor asap if you have a suspicion things aren't quite right! Still at least I can lie in bed without feeling so guilty now that I know that I'm not malingering:)

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get well again quickly.
