10 month old DS doesn't like feeding from left side - what do I do

He's fine on the right side but fights going onto the left. I used to be able to switch him over after he'd been on the right but since weaning he doesn't feed for so long so I don't often get the chance. He's been poorly and didn't keep solids down yesterday so I've just been b/f today and my poor right breast is empty! When I try to switch him over he fights and cries and works himself into a state and I end up leaking everywhere. I've tried the football hold too, but he isn't fooled. I'm beginning to think that there's something wrong with the milk coming out of the left breast and that's why he won't take it, but that's crazy talk, surely?

There won't be anything wrong with the milk from the left side, it's just that he has a favourite breast by the sound of it.

Your right one won't be empty as they are constantly producing milk (think factories rather than ponds).

The same thing happened to me, but I'm still feeding twice a day, just off the one side. DS is 17 mo.

Not really sure what to suggest though- I suppose you can either keep persevering or just feed off one side and maybe be a bit lopsided for a while.

Thanks crikey, I'll wait till he's calmer and keep trying and if he still won't feed then at least I know that I should get enough from one side to keep him going (although it feels and looks absolutely empty!) Smile

Will he feed from the left if you lie down and feed? I feed DD2 (9 months) from the left in the day and the right overnight because she only really likes the left side in the day (because I balance my laptop on the right hand side sofa arm and MN while feeding Blush ) but she is happy with the right side if we lie down.

I was going to suggest the same thing as Serious - try lying down. In fact there is an art to feeding from both breasts (not simultaneously!!) whilst lying on the same side i.e. you don't have to move the baby. Feed with the 'lower' breast first, then sort of lean-in to the baby rolling onto your lower shoulder and offer the upper breast. It takes a little bit of practice, but makes the night feeds SO much easier.
