Does anyone know if there are any references for 'breast fed babies dont get fat'? Im really fed up of people saying my DD is fat/chubby etc and could do with some research to back me up

Breastfed babies don't get fat? That's not true! My DD was EBF & was off the charts chunky. I think it's more, breastfed babies don't over-eat.

There's info & links to research here

Seriously, my DD was over the 100%ile for weight by 3 months & stayed there till she started crawling. The HV didn't believe that I was exclusively breastfeeding her. She's now a totally normally sized nearly 3 yo.

Thanks iskra thats just what I wanted :) Youre right, 'dont overeat' is more what I meant

I am having exactly the same trouble ebf ds is 11weeks and off the chart for his weight and length in 6-9 month clothes and people keep saying he is fat/chubby and that i am feeding him to much. The health vis keeps telling me that its all fine and that he is not overeating he was just meant to be this size:)

Mibby · 24/03/2011 17:29

I think the problem is most of the people who are commenting did schedules and bottles and we're doing on demand bf so i get a lot of comments about over feeding and DD being too fat because of it

My DD was a right chubster - all bf, she was on the top percentiles too, but slimmed down once she got crawling and is now 4 years old and in perfect proportions.

mousymouse · 24/03/2011 17:33

both mine were big, doubled their birthweight at 3 months...
I feel a bit proud that it was all my biomatter :)

Hi there. Within 10 days my dd had pot on 7 oz and by 13 days she had put on 11 oz. My HV said not to worry as unlike ff babies there is no link between big bf babies and obesity. She is now 20 days and im looking forward to seeing what her next weight will be!

TheAllNewOoooh · 24/03/2011 17:57

I EBF'd my DS and at 6 months he was about 25 pounds and off the charts.

Noticably chunky but gorgeous Grin but I had a of comments on his size, including from a HV who told me that if he were formula fed she would advise me to cut down his food, and that it could affect his crawling/walking.

He was crawling at 7 months and walking at 11 months.

Now at 16 months his weight gain has plateaued and he is around 28 pounds. Still a healthy strong lad (90-odd centile for height and weight) but definitely rectangular now rather than square, really active, decent appetite but eats healthy food.

I know a few other babies like this, and actually I think it is quite common, but the charts tend to suggest that they are a bit freakish. Ignore and enjoy your gorgeous cuddly girl.

DD2 put on a whole pound in her first 12 days. I don't know who was more shocked, me or the HV Grin DD1 was a chubster as a baby too but has always been short petite like me so didn't weigh loads.

FreudianSlippery · 24/03/2011 19:26

Don't know any research, but my DS was 11lbs 14oz at birth and I was really really worried he'd end up fat Hmm - but actually he just gradually decreased down the centiles and settled within 'average'

AngelDog · 24/03/2011 19:35

Apparently bf babies get bigger faster at first, but tend to plateau off around 9 months, IIRC.

Mibby · 24/03/2011 19:37

Thanks to everyone who has responded :)
DD is 18 weeks, 18lb 8oz and 27 inches long so just big all round.
My mum says I was similar but slowed down with the weight increase as soon as I was crawling so I guess that could well happen for DD

Really helpful to know there are other lovely big babies out there tho :)

Glad i found this thread. Although ds now 7 gained weight quickly as a baby after weighing 9lb 2 at birth and never losing any, i was very concerned that he would be overweight. But he went down the centiles once becoming mobile and is now more of an average weight. Now with dd now 30 days old, born at 8lb 1, went down to 7lb 11 and has now gone uptoi a whopping 9lb 13 at 4 weeks. was very shocked!Shock
