Should I be worried? 4wk baby sleeping through and going 4 hours between feeds

Hello, sorry to ask for help- this is my psb, my precious sixth born so I should know all this by now Grin

I am excl bf him and up until a few days ago he fed 2-3 hourly, sometimes going a little longer at night

But for the past few days he has been sleeping through the night (around 7 hours) and going roughly 4 hours between feeds. Now as nice as this is I am not expecting it to last, but I am worried that he should maybe be feeding more at this age? Should I wake him to feed?

He seems ok, still lots of wet/dirty nappies, he's alert when he is awake, I have no idea about weight gain though

So is this ok or is it a problem do you think?

Thank you in advance for any help

why don't you weigh him? if his weight is fine, he is growing right, alert and happy in the day, nappies etc then maybe he is a miracle baby?
He isn't jaundiced?

This may be ok, but I agree - seek advice and get him weighed. Sometimes babies who are poorly or who are sickneing for something feed as infrequently as this.

My DD was also like this from very early on and she was fine. I just had plenty of milk so each feed was substantial and she could go longer between. I went to get her weight checked though just in case, which you should probably do, just to put yourself at ease.

Thank you for the replies

I havnt had him weighed for a couple of weeks as he was feeding well and thriving but obviously now I'm a bit worried I will do, clinic is on tuesday so I'll be taking him then

He did have jaundice but it seems to be all but gone now

I will as I said take him to the HV on tues, do you think between now and then I should try to make him feed more often?

Is he sleeping 4 hours between feeds in the day?

I'd offer him a feed more frequently in the day and see if he takes it - obviously you can't force him to feed him he doesn't want to, but you can offer before he demands it.

I agree with RitaMorgan - offer more often and see what happens.

I wouldn't worry too much if he's gaining weight.

DS is 6 weeks (BF) and has slept for 6 hrs + at night since he was about a week old. His feeding during the day is erratic - some days not often, other days (like today) constantly feeding. He's a totally different baby to DD (who never slept and fed for ages!) I was a bit worried but was reassured by the doctor (he is also alert etc.). I'm now going to make the most of it as I'm sure when teeth start coming through etc. it'll be a different story!

My DD was like this. She dropped the 4am feed somewhere between 10 days and 2 weeks and would sleep 6 or 7 hours at night. She was jaundiced but her weight gain was fine and she had plenty of wet nappies so I just went with demand feeding and her timetable. She's 5 months now, a right little chunk, and routinely sleeps 11 or 12 hours a night!

Ds1 did this. Get him weighed and if his weight is fine, be grateful for a miracleGrin

colditz · 21/03/2011 00:44

Don't offer more often if his weight is fine, leave him alone! You might break the miracle!!!

I would be dancing on the rooftops if that was my DS!!
