The terminology of bf/ff

Why is breastfeeding called breastfeeding and not 'natural' feeding?

Why is formula feeding called formula/bottle feeding and not 'artificial' feeding?

Not wanting to bash ffeeders (I mix fed) but surely this change in terminology would help the breastfeeding lobby?

It could be worse, in North America, formula milk is often sold as 'baby milk'.

breastfeeding - because you use your breasts
bottle/formula feeding - because you are giving formula milk via a bottle

Does it matter?

Well, breastfeeding kinda does what it says on the tin really, doesn't? Formula feeding being referred to as bottle feeding might be objectionable to those who give EBM in a bottle but really, does it matter what it's called so long as women are educated properly about the differences between the two and then allowed to do what they feel is right for them and are supported and not judged?

Darlene The history part of the paperwork I filled in when expecting dc3 refered to artificial feeding when asking how previous children were fed.
