Confused about moving from exclusive BF to free flow sippy cup

Hi All

My DD is nearly 5 months and I would like to stop BFing at 6 months.

Someone mentioned it would be a good idea to use a free flow sippy cup so that she doesn't have to 'work' for the contents. I am confused as won't a free flow cup drown her when she is used to breastfeeding?

Sorry if this sounds like a ridiculous question but am fed up trying different bottles and would rather move to cup if it's easier.

Thanks
GreeneOne12

She should be ok with first beaker or first drink cup

My breastfed DD didn't work out how to suck from a cup until she was about 9 months as breastfeeding is more of a wave motion IYSWIM. After that we moved onto milk in a cup with no problem at around 10 months but it would have been difficult to get any volume down her before then (with water I was basically tipping it into her mouth with a very free flow cup or doidy cup).

I don't think many children have this problem but may be where the advice is coming from.

My DD is also a bottle refuser - We have tried sippy cups with some success (although she sometimes wants boob after - i think for comfort!) I'm going to keep trying with cup as also wanted to stop at 6 months (She is 6.5 at the moment!) and I'm going back to work in a few months. I'm unsure however how she will go on in the evening / night with a cup. Does anyone feed their DC with a cup for their last feed / night feed? DD still wakes for night feeds and I can't see how a cup would comfort her (but haven't tried it) Has anyone?

Greenone12 - We have done best with the tommie tippy 4m+ cup. They are only cheap (about £1.50)

Is that the free flow one?

I've been using one of these Tommee Tippee cups since 5.5 months if I ever have to leave ds with milk in the day. Tried one of the valved cups first but he didn't get that you had to suck on it - one where the milk just flows out is easier. I use it for water at mealtimes too.

At first I had to hold/tip it for him and he let a lot just run out of his mouth, but now at 7.5 months he's quite good with it (though still needs a little help).

Greenone12 yes it's a free flowing one....

DD also had lots running down chin at first (I would put 2 bibs on her) but she is getting better.

just worry about night feeds
