5mnth ds and very sore breast/nipple, what is it?

After a very rocky start, I've been bf fine for 3 months now. My 5mnth ds has recently been biting/pulling away whilst nipple still in mouth the last 4 weeks but I've had no lasting pain. Then since last night my left breast has been in agony, I can't remember him biting. I had a stressful day yesterday so I wonder if that's it. My nipple is looking a bit bulbous, a lttle blanched, very sore and my breast is also sore, feeding from left is deep agony.

What is this? Could it be mastitus even if I don't have temp? Will my milk dry up as I can't face expressing even. My breast is feeling fuller throughout the day. What can I do?

I feel gutted as bf had been going so well.

If it's either mastitis or "just" a blocked duct, you have to empty the breast or it will just get worse...sorry!

Take some nurofen/ ibruprofen and try to give it a massage- in the shower or bath if it's sore. Some people suggest using a wide toothed comb- lots of soap, and stroke down towards the nipple across the affected area. You MUST empty the breast if it's a blockage or mastitis, it's sore now, but if you don't empty it, it will get more painful.

It might be an idea to go and get anti biotics, Flucloxacillin is the best one for the job. If you get antibiotics, also take a probiotic (pills or yakult type drink) to avoid getting thrush.

Please get it sorted, my SIL didn't and ended up with an abcess Sad

It could be thrush, my DS has it and he was so fussy at the breast, biting down and pulling away etc. Check for white spots on the roof of his mouth. Would explain your nipples and breasts being sore as well.

Docs gave me drops for DS and a cream for me.

Hth!
