6 month old not really interested in BF anymore....

Hello.

I am posting this is both weaning and bf forums.

My DS is 6 months old and I started weaning him 3 weeks ago - prior to that I was EBF and have no plans to stop BF. I tried finger food (kind of BLW) initally but he got very frustated so I offered him spoon feeding and he loved it. He has loved pretty much all I have offered (apart from Baby food!) and makes noises to indicate he wants more - and is frustrated when I do not provide! So he is eating loads...the day looks like this:

7 ish BF
7.30 ish Breakfast - one weetabix, goats milk, 2 prunes, fruit eg,half a pear
11 ish small BF
12 ish lunch - today was chopped homemade ratatouille, cheddar, yoghurt and half a banana
2-4ish small BF
5 ish supper - today was mashed root veg followed by apple and pears with baby rice and goats milk.

I didn't plan for him to eat so much so quickly but he is so enthusiastic!

Bed is supposed to be at 7 but he is normally knackered by 6 so BF and bed. And then normally just one feed a night (but loads of wake ups which is another topic!)

So far so good...

Except - his interest in BF has dwindled massively. I always offer before meals but often he only suckles a few minutes before refusing. He often refuses his before bed BF too. In fact, the only time he feeds well is his night feed (normally about 4am), the rest of the time he just fusses.

Should I be concerned /trying to get more milk into him? I have upped the amount of dairy in his diet to try and counterbalance it, does that sound right? Would you be worried about how quickly BF has diminished? Thanks!

lots I would only offer water with his meals and not milk. Also, have you tried offering him a bf after his food as well?

lots33 · 03/03/2011 20:20

Hi JJJ thanks for replying. I don't offer milk with meals only water but babyrice and weetabix has milk in it. I am offering BF 7-8 times a day, before and after meals.

Sorry misread your post, saw the goats milk and thought it was the drink.

Out of interest why are you giving goats milk and not cows?

lots33 · 03/03/2011 20:45

Cows milk bought him out in a rash....we will try it again soon and he is still having cows milk cheese and yoghurt so unsure what it is about.

If he's eating cows milk products then the rash might just have been coincidence.

To me that sounds like a lot of solids for a six month old.

Admitidly we did BLW so DD wasn't taking much at this age. Don't forget baby should be getting about 80% of there nurtian from milk untill 12months.

Just my personal opoine but I'd ditch the puddings in favour of more BM, I've never got always giving desert it just teaches small children to always want something sweet tasting after food. Not a great habbit to set for life. Plus be carefull with small children fruit yoghurts are offten quit high in sugar.

try just offering boob before each meal. - not suprising after a meal like that they won't want much after.

also - is the thing that he's more interested in goings-on than BF? - try feeding at a quiet time.

thanks all. i do offer bf before each meal but he never takes much. miggril i take your point re puddings, he doesn't have them all the time and will reduce them. thanks again.
