I expressed 150 mls this morning as DD seems to be feeding less, any way - its in the fridge

when your milk seperates, how much is the fatty stuff on the top and then the watery stuff under?

I have like a smigde of fatty milk

It varies hugely from "a smidge" to about 40%. Did you express till the breast was empty?

OnlyWantsOne · 02/03/2011 18:46

yes expressed till there was no more, literally there is a thin line of thick milk on the top, the rest is a weird greeny blue looking

Another thing not to worry about I think. If you weren't expressing you wouldn't know what it looked like. Remember your DD will be much better at extracting your milk than your pump so this doesn't reflect what she gets herself anyway. Hope things are all going well for you now Smile

I find mine changes quite a lot, went through a really 'creamy' stage last month, always about 1cm on top, but this week the fat is hardly noticeable and a definate blue tinge (DD 20 weeks now). So don't worry, I think its perfectly normal to be very changeable.

PlasticLentilWeaver · 02/03/2011 21:17

I've never had more than thin line at the top. Very Envy at the idea of 40%.

Are you feeling your milk let down?

If my milk doesn't let down then I'm only able to express about 2oz of foremilk which is very watery and blue. With a let down I get about 3 oz and it's a bit whiter.
If I feed DD on one side and express off the other I can get about 4 oz with 3 let downs and it looks just like cow's milk, really white and creamy.

Even when I feel theres no more to come though, I can pop DD on and she'll be gulping for ages, which reassures me that what I am able to pump isn't all that is there.

PenguinArmy · 03/03/2011 05:06

mine never seemed to have much fat in it and I've expressed beyond empty breast and at all times of the day.

blue tinge is also normal. If you express at different times of the day and at different temperatures you probably notice differences.

VeronicaCake · 03/03/2011 09:40

That sounds normal for me too. And another thing not to worry about, your breasts will produce the milk your baby needs.
