HV said I can give cows milk when weaning

That's not right is it? We were discussing weaning at 6 months and I asked what I would give DS to drink when I cut down on feeds and she said I could go straight to cows milk. Everything I've read suggests you shouldn't give that until the baby is a year.

Confused.

No that's not right Confused

Cow's milk should only be given as a drink from 12 months. It can be used in cooking from 6 months though so maybe that is what your HV meant?

Unless advice has changed very recently then no, it needs to be boob or formula as the milk drink. Cows milk is fine on cereal and in food.

You can use cows milk on cereals and in cooking, but not as a main drink until one year- because it doesn't have enough iron.

HV needs to read her Birth to Five book Smile

You can give cows milk as an occasional drink from 6 months, but not as the main drink. I asked the question on here about 6 weeks ago before I returned to work. (DD won't take it anyway as it happens, nor will she take EBM, so she's on water while I'm at work.)

What gaelic sheep said - fine as a food and occasional drink but not as main drink which should be BF or formula (not necessarily that post-6m formula either wossit called - follow-on milk - that's the one)

I'd speak to the HV again and check what she meant, say you thought cows milk shouldnt be a main drink til 1yo if she says the same thing. (I think it might even say this in the birth to five book you get given). It'd be good for her to realise her advice is wrong/being misunderstood to stop her saying the same to other nonMN mums.
