I'm teetotal so never relevant for me but I think they say there's no reason why a small glass of wine would cause significant problems.

MegBusset · 16/02/2011 16:10

Yay, one or two small glasses will be fine :)

sancerrre · 16/02/2011 16:13

I have a glass every evening. Has important antioxidants in it.

Ciske · 16/02/2011 16:19

There's an old wisdom in my (Dutch) family that says brown ale is good for BFing. I'm sure it translates to wine, or at least so I kept telling myself when DD was young. Grin

Bumperlicious · 16/02/2011 16:20

The only thing that stopped me at this age was knowing that I had to be up feeding at night & being a bit of a light weight. But if that doesn't bother you then yay.

japhrimel · 16/02/2011 16:38

Maybe make it a small spritzer...my tolerance for alcohol has gone down so much a full glass of wine makes me tipsy! Grin

BristolJim · 16/02/2011 16:47

Grapes right? One of your five a day? You'd almost be harming your baby by not having a little snifter...

CointreauVersial · 16/02/2011 16:48

Yay. One small glass.

Ghostie · 16/02/2011 18:27

Hasn't done my bub any harm!

CamperFan · 16/02/2011 19:32

Abr1de · 16/02/2011 19:33

Of course. WHy not?

sanam2010 · 16/02/2011 19:35

Yay. Whatever makes u happy. Be careful about dehydration but small glass won't hurt..

Abr1de · 16/02/2011 20:08

Dehydration??

bringbackaqualibra · 16/02/2011 20:20

Yay. Just drink a big glass of water with it - as alcohol dehydrates you and you need maximum fluids for BF!

megcleary · 16/02/2011 21:25

Wine just a small one Smile

Go for it! Have it just after you've fed the baby and enjoy it. Alcohol does reach the breastmilk in the same quantities as blood so the baby will get a bit, but one glass will be a tiny amount.
The biggest danger of drinking with a newborn is that you can't care for the baby, but that would have to be quite a bit of drink!
If you've not drunk for a while then I'd advise you to only have a small glass and see how you get on. It might just make you really, really sleepy and if you're co-sleeping this could be a problem.

Breastfeeding Network leaflet on Alcohol

www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/Alcohol_and_Breastfeeding_March_2009.pdf

"The effect of maternal consumption of alcohol is insignificant except at high or regular consumption levels."

Bit early to be enjoying wine now but you can do it with a clear conscience later on.

Yay, definitely.

The only thing to be aware of, is that you may find it slows your letdown slightly.

Toplistmaker · 18/02/2011 21:22

Yay for sure, enjoy!
