I have been told that I should start giving LO water from 4 months. DD has exczema and I have been told that water might help. What I don't get with water though is how do I know when she wants water or a proper feed. I am a bit confused!

is she FF? I tried giving DS a bit of water before a feed and then a bit afterwards to try and stop him getting full from it.

Is your DC bf/ff?

An ebf baby does not need water and giving it would make no difference to eczema. I don't know about ff, but it sounds really unlikely to me that water would prevent/alleviate eczema. As far as I know the only reason to over water to a ff baby is when it is hot and they may need more fluids.

If she is breastfed, she won't need water as she gets everything she requires from the breast milk.

I've never heard of water helping with exczema but maybe someone else can correct me.

Was is a GP or a dermatologist who told you that?

She is BF and no it was a Mum of many children who has lots of experience with little ones. Thanks for your replies!

try olive oil? I heard that can be good if you use a little bit...

I'm pretty sure water isn't recommended at all before 6 months. I suppose you could try but I really don't see what difference it would make. Have you tried cutting out dairy? I've heard that can make a difference sometimes.

Thanks again!

She doesn't need water until she's on solids. How are you treating the eczema?

I'm sure that southmum means olive oil on the skin, not to drink Grin.

No, no, no to water. It will strip the protective coating off the gut that the BM leaves there which protects against allergens in the first place. I would go with what bertie suggested - try cutting out dairy and/or wheat. Check out the allergy forums for more advice on this.
