Would a low fat diet affect my milk quality/supply?

I had my gallbladder removed in 2008, and have since had DS2 (now 14 weeks old). Didn't have any problems for the first couple of years, but am now finding that I can't tolerate fat in my diet - any dairy or animal-based fat gives me shocking stomach cramps and requires urgent toilet visits within an hour or so of eating it!

I've put myself on a very low-fat diet which is helping hugely - I can still tolerate nut/vegetable fats i.e. avocado, almonds etc. and small amounts of oily fish, but dairy and red meat is right off the menu.

DS2 is exclusively BF, and I'm slightly concerned that a low-fat diet might have a bad effect on my breastmilk. Will the fat in my milk just come from my (ahem, generous) reserves/fat stores?

He seems happy and settled, but feeds frequently - about every 2 hours. He sleeps from 11pm to 7am though, thankfully.

If anyone could reassure/advise me, I'd be v grateful :)

and you are worried?

Not worried so much as wanting reassurance that such a strict diet won't be detrimental to the quality of my milk. DS1 self-weaned around the time I had my gallbladder removed - he was 14 months old - and I have since wondered if it was because I was on a v strict no-fat diet and if affected my milk.

Ninth was being slighly tongue in cheek Smile.

There is some info here on Kellymom. Think the bit you are after is "How does my nutrient intake affect breastfeeding?".

your milk will be fine.

after I had ds2 I was on a vegan diet as he could not tolerate dairy/egg.

i lost a lot of weight, but he was a great big fat baby! I was also expressing and donating milk to a friend and she commented on how much more fattier/creamier my milk was compared to hers when they separated out! lol

sounds like all is going well with your little boy so try not to worry :)
