6 week DS tugging at nipple, strongly prefers one side and making and donkey noises (!)

DS is now 6 weeks, and I just wanted to check a few things that are going on. He had posterior tongue tie divided two weeks ago and gradually the pain is improving. We seem to have hit a plateau though and he reverts to chomping at some feeds. I can put up with it as it is not really painful compared to before, but my nipples are still quite sensitive and sore.

The last few days he does seem more chompy again and also pulls back and tugs at my nipple or curls up his body and buries his head into the breast, kind of worrying at it quite a lot. I wondered if it was to do with my let down not coming quickly enough but he seems to do it when the milk is flowing too. He is being treated for thrush as he has a white tongue and I am using daktarin cream on me too, although I don't think I'm in enough pain for it to be thrush.

He is settled in himself and doing plenty of wees and huge yellow poos and putting weight on fine.

He also strongly prefers the right side and will have all his 'big' non-nibbly feeds on that side. The left side he tugs at a lot more and I know it lets down slower. He tends to only feed a bit on that side and never gets into continuous rythmical gulps like on the other side - he'll maybe swallow two times then suck at it again for quite a while so I'm not sure he's getting much that side.

He also has a nasty habit when he comes off the breast of yanking off with gums clamped and giving it a good tug/chew before letting go.

One other thing, at some feeds he really sucks in his breath and makes a hee-haw type sound like a donkey - just wondered if all this was normal or if there is some more fine tuning I can do to improve things?

Whole haven't had any training so can't help you with this, sorry. Just wanted to bump it for you and say, hope you get some help soon, especially for your donkey noises Grin

dd only liked my left boob so I used a v-shaped cushion and held her in the American football hold to put her on the right one - it kind of tricked her into thinking she was on the other one!

To get him off, put your finger into the side of his mouth and hopefully that'll stop him chomping down. If he starts tugging, take him off and put him back on.

Have you tried nipple cream?

Good luck and well done for getting to 6 weeks! xx

Whole have you seen a Bfing Counsellor?

Sounds similar to my 6wo DD. She seems to do alot of that with fast letdown though.

My DD (now 6 months) used to do a donkey noise (not sure if same donkey noise as your DC though...). I used to do it also when pregnant with her so it was really weird when she started doing it as well. The feeling when I was pregnant was a sort of breathlessness that caused me to take in a big gulp of breath. Anyway, she doesn't do it now and neither do I!
