3 week old just started being spectacularly sick in middle of feed

Anyone know why? I have got a fast letdown and it does seem to spurt and spray for quite a while through the feed. Today, twice, he was gulping and all of a sudden he was so sick it came through his mouth and nose. Was such a lot of it.

I'm block feeding as recommended on the la leche website as I'm pretty full and because of the letdown problem doing 2 hours one side then the next and he'd just recently had a feed on that side he was sick on both times.

Is it just one of those things or is there anything I can do? Did hear gurgling and gulping so should I have taken him off earlier to wind (but happened within 5 mins of the feed)

Turned out my DD just grew out of it. She maybe had it at every feed for about a week. Wasn't anything to worry about. Just messy!

Or it could just be one of those things they do for a bit and grow out of - I hope it's the latter! If it continues and you are concerned speak to your GP or health visitor.

Sounds like oversupply - I had this with both dds. Like hosepiping milk down them like, poor things. Dd1 didn't cope too well (and I wasn't as good at managing it), and I ended up using nipple shields to flow things down until she could cope at about 4 or 5 months.

Dd2 was bigger and coped ok after a few weeks. I used the tips here and on kellymom to control my supply (and she wouldnt take a bottle ever, so I couldn't be arsed to express either, which must have helped!).

How old is your lo? If they are gaining weight well anyway you could try extending the block periods (2 hours doesn't sound like v long). You could also unlatch at the first let down, and let the first forceful bit spurt out into a muslin (although my dds tended to go mental when I tried this!). Some say that feeding lying on your back helps, but I found this a) bloomin hard and b) didn't make any difference. Have a look at the kellymom site for other tips.

Thanks - he's coming up to 4 weeks and gaining weight well. The spraying letdown seems to last forever when I take him off and spray into muslin and as you say - he gets really frustrated after a while. Will try extending block feeding and check out kellymom. Thanks. Am hoping supply will settle down soon!

My twins both did this from about 2/3 weeks. I'm not sure when it stopped, but they rarely do it now (at 10 weeks). I also had oversupply, which resolved itself when I stopped all expressing, and I seem to have a fast let down too.

Unless it is really concerning you, I'd wait it out. The vomiting must have stopped after 3 or 4 weeks for me to have forgotten when it stopped!

Sorry, should have noticed the age in the title! Yes, oversupply is really common in the early weeks when your body is just getting into the swing of things - it will hopefully all settle down within a couple of weeks. It's a pain, but much less of a worry than wondering if they are getting enough milk (plus good for growth spurt times as the extra milk is already there!).

With dd2, I remember one spectacular hot summer day when she was about the same age, where she had a feed and then vomited all down my back, under my shirt and into my knickers. A couple of hours and another feed later, and she vomited all over my front, down my top and into my bra. I can laugh about it now, but I was none too impressed at the time.
