DS suddenly giving my nipples a hard time after 5 trouble-free months

Afer 5 months of trouble-free bf'ing (apart from the usual tenderness during the toughening up phase in the first few weeks) ds has suddenly started to bf rather vigourously often sucking at the same time as pulling his head away slightly - my nipples are consequently in a right state with red aureolas and cracks that heal/come back/heal etc. His lovely gentle suck seems to have gone to be replaced by a much harsher action.
I've been liberally applying the lansinoh to keep them moist and have been paying attention to his latch which appears OK. He has had his bottom 2 teeth since he was 3 months although apart from the odd cheeky painful nip they don't seem to be getting in the way when he is actually feeding.

Is this something anyone else has experienced? I am wondering whether it is down to him craving solids and therefore seeking more oral stimulation while feeding but don't want to start him on solids until he is 26 weeks. I'm pretty peed off though to be suffering from sore nipples at this late stage though!

Sounds a bit like teeth to me. Could his top two be coming?

Have to say unfortunately I have experienced this each time DS gets any. I had to ring a BF counsellor when he was 13 months, as it got quite bad for a few days and I didn;t want to give up!

It settles down after a bit. Stick with it and keep using the Lansinoh!

I can't feel any more teeth coming through yet although doubtless they are.....could be his gums are hardening up in preparation. It is agony though isn't it? I just thank god he is sleeping through the night so they get a break!

My ds is almost 5 months and has no teeth yet but for the last 3 days he has been doing as you describe. He's clamping on my nipples, pulling back and whining. He's not letting go though and is sucking away. He's also a bit whingy so I assume there must be teeth on the way. It's agonising and I'm hopeful that it's a brief phase and will pass. I read somewhere that just before the teeth come through babies like to clamp down on something hard to push the teeth back a bit and relieve the pain. I just wish he wouldn't do it on me. Roobie, did the same thing happen with ds's first teeth?

Roobie you can't have everything

I can laugh about the sleepless nights now [hollow cackle].

I don't recall the same thing happening with his first teeth strangely...but as they came through so early maybe they were predestined to be easy ones ifkwim.....not so for the remainder it would seem!

Yes, DS did that about 5 months. I thought it was related to his teeth coming in (as he got the first one just before 6 months) but if your DS is doing it too and has teeth already then maybe it's just something they do at 5 months?

I think it lasted for a month or so -- he's certainly stopped it now (8 months).
