Weird hooting sound when breast feeding- any ideas?

My dd (not me) makes a strange hooting sound when she is feeding... I think it is her trying to catch her breath as she is very snuffly...

Do you think i should be concerned about this noise? My dh thinks I an worrying too much and he is probably right, but I am worried as it is such an odd sound for her to make!

is she otherwise ok?

what age is she?

I'd probably check with a breastfeeding group to see what other's experience is, but my DD sort of talks to herself when she's feeding (mumble mumble mumble). Just make sure that her nose is definitely clear of your breast, and if she is snuffly (ie has a cold) you can give saline drops up her nose prior to feeding to help clear it.

She seems otherwise fine... She grunts a lot when she is sleeping, but looks healthy and is putting in weight. She is also very alert :-)

I did ask at the local breast feeding group but no-one else had experienced the 'hooting sound' on her breathing in...

Seems like maybe I am worrying over nothing... Pssshhh.. Just being an anxious first time mum

my DD this for a few weeks after she was born!

It was 13 years ago, but I can hear that hooting now...we've even got it on video Grin

She grew out of it...

how old is your DD?

My DS makes a number of odd noises while feeding, including one which I suppose could be called a hoot!

He also snuffles, grunts, sighs, gulps and moans to himself (thankfully not all at the same time). I think a couple of the noises occur when my letdown is a bit fast, but he seems happy enough.

He's 8 months now, but has never been very quiet. Bit of a bugger when I'm trying to be discreet Grin

She is just over three weeks old- and that is very reassuring thank you! I do love mumsnet.....

Actually this reminds me that DD did hoot when sleeping when she was younger - she's now 5.5mo and I only get the occasional 'hoot'. Perhaps it's something to do with being in a dream-like state?

It's almost a shame when you notice that some of the newborn snuffles, grunts and noises have stopped...

Tryharder · 13/12/2010 00:38

My DD did this when she was born. I used to do it when i was pregnant with her - it was weird. It was like, I suppose, a sort of mild reflux that made me breathe in sharply with, as you said, a hooting sound. She's stopped it now though as have I. Smile

Oh yes! I had almost forgotten this. DS used to hoot REALLY loudly. Always used to make DP and I giggle like mad. We wanted to record it, but before we did he grew out of it :(.

I think it was just a sound of complete bliss. It was really sweet.
