that vibrating thing at the end of a feed what is it!

at the end of her feed when she is drifting off for a nap my daughter stop sucking the long sucks she normally does and starts almost vibrating her mouth (mixed in with the occasional suck) why? what is this?! she doesnt do it everytime but the feeds where she does seem the most satisfying for her.

Is it possibly comfort sucking? It probably allows her to stay at the breast for longer and not having to come off because she is full if you see what I mean. Maybe that's why she feels more satisfied. My Dd does something similar, a different kind of suck I guess..

DS did that! I could tell he had had enough if his jaw did the weirdy vibrating thing for a second or two .

My HV told me they do that when they've had the hind milk! Can't find anything on the internet about it though, but I must say she is usually right about these things, and will explain why your baby is happier after these feeds!

Could be flutter sucks. Think its supposed to trigger fatty milk at end of feed?

That fluttering is towards the end of a feed. The is a graph that shows the different intensities/rhythms of suckling as a feed progresses and at the end is the 'butterfly' suckling before a feed finishes. I just wish I could find the darn thing so I could show you.

Yeah, that'll be it, I remember a graph. BF lady said not to pull them off becaue they get extra special milk.

DS2 does this. I thought it is when he is comfort sucking and falling asleep, so I tend to pull him off and he then falls asleep in my arms. Anyone know for certain if its before or after they get the hind milk for definite?

There is no such thing as hind milk sorry rimsky's HV). IIRC it was 'found' that milk was thin at the start and fatty at the end of a feed by researchers asking women to express at the beginning and end of a feed. It was assumed that a change over happened and at some point breasts made fatty milk rather than watery milk.

This is not the case - what really happens is breasts make one milk BUT the longer it sits in the breast the lower fat it is (fat sticks to the duct walls and is expelled later on in a feed). If the gaps between feeds are short enough (and if you aren't scheduling feeds with huge gaps) your baby will extract bm. Anyway, the majority of the milk a baby gets during a feed is made as they feed (very large capacity mothers excluded).

The fluttering is the baby comfort sucking on the breast (is sometimes called Non-nutritive suckling) and is not designed to extract milk.

Am so pleased that other people's DC's do this. None of my friends had any idea what I was talking about and my Mum laughed when I showed her what DS was doing

Mine did this, always took it as a sign of satifaction/relaxation. I have seen sleeping babies with dummies in their mouths do it too. It must be a blissful state! We have a generational family name for it, sounds like "nunning" don't ask we where that comes from.

Good question! Ds does it too. Definitely when he seems to be sucking for comfort

During breastfeed my baby vibrates his mouth for 1 or 2 sec. And after that vibration he start sucking milk again. What is this vibration type thing? Really worrid is he okay?? Why he shows these type of patterns. He is a month old.

I think it's pretty common, judging by the previous posts on this thread! My DD certainly does it. It's either trying to get more milk, or just comfort sucking.
