hi there

i am sure this has been covered a million times but too knackered to do proper search. just home from hospital today with 3 days old DS. the main problem is excriating nipple pain when he is feeding. i know this is usually a latch problem but about 5 midwives in hospital checked and said looked like the latch was fine. he hasn't lost weight, milk is in and breasts fairly engorged but no cracks or anything. not quite at wits end yet but nearly there as it is just so sore. and i feel like a total wimp! is there anything i can do? expecting comm midwife in tomorrow. thanks if any advice.

I'd try to see a breastfeeding counsellor to check the latch - midwives aren't often experts. Has he been checked for tongue tie?

My ds's latch was fine but it was still a bit sore the first few days - not excruciating though. Do you have any lansinoh? I slathered it on after every feed and it really helped.

Also, do you have enough breast in his mouth? I was quite suprised at first by how much actual breast tissue needed to be in his mouth. If I didn't get it right or ds slipped off and just had the nipple in his mouth it really hurt.

thanks for that. thought about phoning the nct counsellor so thats a good idea. just purchased lansinoh! and i will have a look at how much breast tissue he is taking in. thanks.
