Advice/support required for Gloucestershire Breastfeeding Support Network

Hello

This is a bit of a plea for support or advice on how to get financial support for the GBSN, which is a charity that provides breastfeeding support via about a dozen breastfeeding support groups in Gloucestershire.

The local pct has withdrawn it's funding for the GBSN which means that the charity can no longer afford to run the groups.

The groups currently run in Sure Start centres or church halls. They are staffed by mums volunteering as peer supporters, having undergone training, and most of the groups also have a trained BFC. The groups provide invaluable support to breastfeeding mums, both new mums and ongoing support to mums feeding LOs of all ages. In one of the groups for example, yesterday there were approximately 10 new mums looking for support. They groups also provide a social network for mums. I made some of my best mum friends there.

Some of the groups will close at Christmas, the rest by March.

Can anyone give any advice on getting funding for such a charity? There is a treasurer who is exhausting every available avenue but I am hoping to find more advice and tips.

Without these groups thousands of new mums are going to go without the support to help them establish & continue breastfeeding.

Can you become part of the Children's centres? Part of their remit is to provide bfing support to their community so they would have to have something in place if your group was to cease to exist (hopefully no though!).

Are any of the local hospitals going baby friendly? BFI hospitals have to have breastfeeding support so could you go in to the ante-natal/new baby midwife clinics?

Have you tried for lottery funding?

Try contacting the NCT/La Leache League to see if they have any advice or would team up with you.

Go to the local papers/television stations etc to see if they can drum up some public support in the local area for you.

I syour MP aware of what is happening?

Off to school pick up but will ask around and see if I can get more info as group I am involved with has faced this before (and won twice!)

Bumping for any more thoughts, as I have had a lot of help and support from GBSN with both of my children.
