I've heard of this before. Apparently if you post pics of yourself BFing, they'll take them down. I'm not sure if it's only when you can see a bit of boob or not.

lowrib · 16/10/2010 23:04

It's truly ridiculous. But then FB is American, and they're really weird about nipples. Remember all that fuss about Janet Jackson briefly showing (shock horror) a nipple on stage? And even when it appeared to be by accident (although was it actually for the publicity? I forget). They went mental anyway. The rest of the world was like Confused what's the big deal?!

Caboodle · 16/10/2010 23:19

Is it profile pics or links? I have posted links to bf sites via fb and they have had pics attached of bf mums with lots of boob on show - have never had them taken down. 3rd child due Feb - am VV tempted to put profile pic of me bf now Grin

NonnoMum · 16/10/2010 23:21

I had one up and even joined a group called something like, "Hey, FB, breastfeeding isn't scary" (or summit)...

All disappeared...

gaelicsheep · 16/10/2010 23:24

Oh FGS. I was Googling for videos of b/f lying down and came across one on YouTube, but it was restricted for over 18's only. It's blardy ridiculous and very offensive to mothers.

FlipFantasia · 17/10/2010 11:27

lowrib the janet jackson thing was pretty mad alright!

Caboodle according to the article his profile pic (of a bare-breasted woman in profile carrying her baby on her back) is fine but the breastfeeding ones weren't Hmm

Nonno and Gaelic I'm so shocked by it. No wonder women feel bad about feeding in public! Also I'm sure I clicked through to the breastfeeding picnics FB page from a recent thread on here and there were pictures of women feeding...

Flip, that is soo bizarre and so annoying, will def put profile pic of me bf when baby arrives, and keep reposting if they take it down. (Sadly I know I will also lose some friends by doing this as they are anti-bf but hey, never mind.)

SpecterBooAlot · 17/10/2010 13:30

This made me so angry. I changed my picture back to me feeding DS. FFS its what breasts are for. There ls than is less fuss about skimpy outfits on young girls than seeing breasts useds for their natural function Angry

Group is called Hey Facebook, Breastfeeding Is Not Obscene.

NonnoMum · 17/10/2010 13:48

Ah - thank you Sir Boob.

americans are weird. Someone once described them as having "Jekyll and Hyde" personality (as a nation, not individually - individually they are all lovely). i.e a huge porn industry but if a couple are in an advert having breakfast together, they have to show a wedding ring.

i.e very sexually promiscuous but very prudish too.

edam · 17/10/2010 14:01

Well, the modern nation was founded by a bunch of Puritans who were cross that they weren't allowed enough scope to persecute the unGodly as much as they wanted in Britain. So puritanical attitudes underpin the culture.

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 17/10/2010 14:05

One of my FB friends has pictures of herself BF her new born. They haven't been removed.

FlipFantasia · 17/10/2010 14:32

Thanks for the name of the group SpecterBoobALot - have joined.

This seems stranger and stranger to me - there are definitely pictures of women breastfeeding their infants on FB but other pictures are deemed pornographic/obscene and removed. I think it must be to do with how visible/prominent the breast is (I'm married to an American but even he concedes there is a crazy strain of puritanism running through the culture).

blackcurrants · 17/10/2010 15:50

Apparently what they remove has to do with whether there's nipple/areola showing. FB bans female nipples, basically, so if the baby's head is covering the nipple it's fine, but if there's any showing and it gets flagged/reported, they take it down.

Lots of prudes here, and they can't seem to get what they want to be prudish about straight - drunk people in mini-skirts and bikinis in provocative poses make fine FB photos, apparently, but a mother feeding her baby does not - cos gasp NIPPLE might be on show!

It's loony, IMHO.

thehumanpacifier · 17/10/2010 16:48

Absolutely rediculous. This is what breasts were made for. Has made me really angry! In a society where the most natural act is somehow seen as wrong and that children need to be protected from seeing it.
