Long-term/ extended breastfeeders- are your toddlers breast obsessed?

Still BF 3 yo DD. We've had several incidents recently

  • changing after swimming she was watching the 2 teachers stripping off. "Why have they got num-nums"?
  • sitting on DS's GF's lap. "You've got small num nums"
  • after watching a performance she marched up to the performer and told him "your monkey [woman in monkey costume] has num-nums". He PHSL.

She is absolutely obsessed. Is this a normal 3 yo fascination or just because she is still BF? Do other BF toddlers do it?

Lol. Yes it's normal. They will ask the same bloody question 5 thousand times a day. She's picked this because it's familiar to her. I wouldn't call this obsessed, she's just interested.

Just wiat till she hits four, and all the questions are about death Hmm

I try to answer questions honestly, but as simply as possible.

eg "they've got 'num nums' because they are women, they can use them to feed babies, just like mummy".

I stopped BF DS at 8 weeks and he LOVES boobies! Grin

My 2.5yo is obsessed with mine but not yet with other peoples!! Although he did see a photo of louise rednapp in underwear in my Vogue and pointed out her breasts!

my ds2 is 2.9yrs and i have just weaned him. no interest in breasts, even when i'm bf ds3.

he is obsessed with his and other willies though! never misses a chance to get it out and play 'look mummy it's bigger!', 'have you got a willy, has xxx etc' would assume the breast thing is a similar learning about bodies thing.

coldcomfortHeart · 30/09/2010 08:10

Yes, very interested- too young to be asking lots of questions (22m) but pats mine affectionately, points them out in magazines/on other people etc. and grins with open delight when he sees babies breastfeeding, he thinks it's just the best!

We went to a farm at the weekend and saw a really cute litter of piglets. DD loudly informed quite a large crowd that the baby pigs were eating booby.

I don't think she's noticed on other people that much yet (she'll be 2 in about a week), sometimes she tries to stick her hand down my mum's top though. And when DH got out of the shower the other day she said "daddy's boobies". He was not amused.

ShowOfHands · 30/09/2010 08:23

DD is slowly weaning at 3.5. Not really interested.

More obsessed with reproduction and death.

YunoYurbubson · 30/09/2010 08:36

My bf'd 2.5yo is obsessed with mine. Sometimes he likes to chat about his too. His are too tiny for milmies apparently.

Ineedsomesleep · 30/09/2010 10:56

I'd say it was pretty normal but at that age by bf's little girl was totally obsessed and she was ff. It could just be a little girl thing.

Awww. My LO is only 6 weeks, but this morning he woke up from napping in bed with me, reached out, patted my boob and grinned at me - I am so proud Grin

ynh · 30/09/2010 11:01

Mine weaned at 3 1/2 and he's not remotely interested in mine or anyone else's. I think he did once ask why I had 'those' (pointing), and I said mummies have them so babies can have drinks of milk.

Bottoms, on the other hand...!

theboobmeister · 01/10/2010 13:15

My DD weaned at 3 and now, aged 5, tells anyone who will listen that "my mummy is obsessed with breastfeeding!"

Babieseverywhere · 01/10/2010 20:00

My breastfed 4 year old DD1 is obsessed with how babies are made and how they get out of mummy's tummy. To the point of telling me I still have a baby in my tummy

Whilst 2 year old breastfed DS is obsessed with boobs....his own and his willy. Anything he can show off whilst naked and dancing ;)

Well I'm just back from holiday and wearing a bikini was a nightmare. My 18 month old DS was very very excited by the easy access to and showing off of my wares, which are pretty pathetic compared to the other ones on display at the beach. He was absolutely obsessed by my breasts in a way he never has been before. He waved his hands excitedly and developed the biggest smile every time he looked in my direction. Briefly cute but it became such a drag (He quite literally pulled the damned bikini top off on multiple occasions and I took to lying face down on a towel rather than feed him again...) that I suggested he have a drink of "Daddy's milk" a few times. He grinned, sat down on his Dads lap to BF and then tweaked his nipples whilst saying "num num num" but hurriedly made his way back to me and the damned bikini.

Thankfully we've returned to jumper weather and the obsession has passed.
