latch issue? sometimes as they get bigger and all is going well then latch gets a big sloppy

might be worth seeing a bfc to check that he's latching on well and not causing the pain

is he teething? that can affect latch too

not teething at the minute. there is no actual bruise btw, it just feels like quite a painful bruise. am at bf group on wed so will ask MW to have a look to see if we are doing it right. although MW doesn't seem to really know much about BF Hmm there is another mum who is great wih advice so might aske her instead.

hi could it be thrush? Have you had antobiotics recently or are a bit run down? Thrush in the milk ducts feels like a dull throb with occasional knife like pains especially after a feed. You most likely wont have any visible signs on the nipple but it could be pinker and shinier than the unaffected breast. Also bb may have a white coating on tongue or flecks of white that hard to rub off on insides of mouth. If it is like this get to your GP asap as treating early helps. 400mg fluconazole loading dose then 100mg twice a day for at least two weeks or for at least a week after symptoms have gone. Plus bb needs treatment with daktarin gel after every feed. my husband is a GP and was pretty clueless about breast thrush so we had to do a little research! My own GP wasnt sure how much to treat either. Also taking acidophillus tablets helps.

I was about to suggest thrush too- I had it, but somehow my DD didn't, so i didn't realise as quickly as I would have if she had had it.

with thrush you would expect to have itchy, sore nipples which look red
stabbing pains are a later symptom, and by themselves not necessarily an indication of thrush

hadn't thought of that. no signs of it on ds but i will ring GP on monday to get an appt. i haven't had antibiotics or been feeling run down, still will get appt though. thanks.
