if you have had sex then yes you could be pregnant

breastfeeding exclusively is not 100% reliable as contraception

do a test

GruffaloMama · 01/09/2010 11:19

BFing is only reliable if your baby is exclusively breastfeeding (ie before about 6 months). You might have conceived before your periods returned. Would be worth a test. Good luck.

Dinghy · 01/09/2010 11:20

Gruffalo it's not that reliable then.

OP - breastfeeding is only effective as a contraceptive if:

  • the baby is under 6 months
  • only breastfeeding (no solids, water, dummy, formula)
  • no long gaps between feeds

If your baby is a year old and on solids then its not effective. Do a test.

On the bright side the age gap means they should be nice and close as they grow up Grin

good luck with the test!

i guess everyone has different assessments of risk, I am EBF 4 hourly round the clock (no solids, bottles or dummies), baby only 4.5 months and neither DH nor I would not want to take a chance!

Sorry Dingy - cross-posted as I hadn't refreshed the page. Loganberry - good luck.

EBF isn't really an effective method of contraception regardless of age of child. I say this because I was speaking to a Dr who was EBF her DC1 every 2-3hrs and she concieved when her 1st DC was only 4wks old.

So it goes to show that women can be fertile quite soon after birth.
