Worried about state of poo for EBF 4 week baby

Hi All,

Am a little concerned if my DC3 is getting enough milk from me..

I am rubbish at expressing milk - always have been but my DC2 did well on being ebf - however DC3 poo is mustard coloured but the "bits" are a shade of green...

Is that normal? I have been reading that greenish poo is a sign that baby is only get foremilk and not the creamy stuff...

He is pooing about 6-7 times a day and seems to cluster feed alot, 10 mins then sleeps for 10 mins then feeds again.. I keep him on the same breast for a total of 20 mins and then offer the 2nd breast..

He lost 8% of his birth weight and has now only just passed that this week - now 4 weeks old - should I be concerned about the green bits??

Hi Rohey

Bf poo can be a range of colours - beats me how they manage it Confused Grin

I would notice that ds's would get a bit green if he was fighting off an infection like a cold, but also sometimes it felt it would change colour a bit just for the hell of it..

Does he have plenty of heavy wet nappies (ie if you dropped them on the floor they would "thud") - are the poos in his dirty ones at least the size of a 50p piece, or some of them anyway? Is he gaining weight steadily now (not necessarily in leaps and bounds, but gaining)?

If so, then I'd say he's getting plenty and I wouldn't worry about the colour too much Smile

Plenty of dirty nappies, cluster feeding, and back to birth weight at 4 weeks all sounds perfectly fine to me. You could try block feeding if you wanted - keep him on the same breast for longer than you are doing - but honestly, it all sounds like you're doing great.

Thanks Ladies...

I am now relieved that it appears normal...

He poos and wee's alot so I should have guessed all was well...

His poos are a nappy full in size, and he is gaining at last weigh in..

Thanks again xx
