Can windy mum = windy baby??

I freely admit I know next to nothing about how breast milk is actually made by the body so accept this could be a totally stupid question!!

1 week old EBF DD tends to suffer from wind but it's not overly bad, however last night she was really suffering and it didn't matter how much she burped there was more.

I'd actually eaten a punnet (yes I'm greedy) of grapes yesterday afternoon which I love but do tend to make me a little windy shall we say Blush

Could this have affected DD as well??

Thanks for any answer (and not laughing if this is a stupid question Wink)

Yep, ime. Everything you eat goes into your milk, even though it's in very tiny amounts. It can be more noticeable when you've eaten a lot of certain thing.

I put it down to my DCs having similar systems to me and therefore being affected to a degree in the same way by foods.

If a baby has a serious wind problem or colic, some people suggest giving up certain foods (there'll be a list somewhere of the usual culprits) but not everyone believes how much effect this really has on baby via your milk.

It's always made me smile when my DC's trumps smelled, how can I say... a bit familiar?

Kellymom says it isn't a big deal because breastmilk is made from what's in your blood, not what's in your digestion. But some babies (especially very young ones) may be affected by something their mum has eaten - but not necessarily something that gives her wind IYSWIM.

(Incidentally the Kellymom site is a great bf resource - take a look if you've not seen it yet.)

Every midwife & HV told me breastfed babies don't need burping. No-one told my DS, though. Hmm

Congratulations on your DD!

Thanks both, will have a look at Kellymom.

DD definely hasn't been told that bf babies don't need winding, never though DH and I would be in the position of celebrating baby farts!!
