3 day old DD not feeding could I be too full?

Hi

DD3 is 3 days old. I have been breast feeding and things seemed to be going ok. I think my milk has now come in because my breasts are now like cannon balls! They are quite solid and very tender to touch.

This morning DD hasn't been feeding like she was. Before she would go on first breast until she stopped or came off (up to about 5 minutes) and then if she was interested she would go on second. This morning she has been going on first breast but only sucking a few times then not interested. Could I be too full.

Thanks for reading.

Can you try expressing a bit of milk to relieve the engorgement?

SirBoobAlot · 19/08/2010 10:34

Yes, certainly possible, DS had the same problem when my milk came in.

Try hand expressing a little bit off, or use a pump, just remember not to express too much as the more you pump off, the more your breasts will make to replace it.

Definitely express a bit to soften up and give her another try. It can be hard for them to get enough nipple in their mouth if it's all hard.

I tried her on the other breast and she did better but obviously I can't keep doing that! I will try hand expressing and I think I have heard a warm flannel might help?

Thank you for the replies.

I've heard that a warm flannel may help. Is she feeding any better this evening?

Congratulations on your DD btw Smile

Hi,
Congrats on DD! I was exactly the same when my milk came in, boobs were ENORMOUS and nipple was so hard and stretched that DD couldn't get a proper latch, she just kept bouncing off.

I used to go and sit in the bath in the morning with my boobs hanging in the water with flannels wrapped around them, then expressed some off with pump when I got out.

My bf counsellor told me to express for just a couple of minutes on each side just to ease the discomfort and fullness, hopefully a couple of minutes won't make your supply go into over drive.

Counsellor also told me to take ibuprofen for a couple of days to ease soreness and swelling. That seemed to help a lot, but you might want to check with MW first.

Cabbage leaves in bra (chilled first) were also a god send!

Hope it gets better v soon!
