Breastfeeding 10 month old - he Bites :(!

Hello all mamas,

My 10 month old has started enjoying his new learned talent - biting while breastfeeding. Yesterday almost everytime I breastfed him I had to stop it after 30 sec as he gives me that naughty wink and smiles and bites!

I had made it clear everytime that he is not getting milk if he continues but that has hardly any impact on him so far.
On one hand I feel guilty that he is not getting enough milk in (as I stop immediately the minute he bites me) and on the other hand I dread giving him my breast.

If I give him a bottle everytime I am afraid the milk production would also get affected.

Please help with suggestions/ideas.

Thanks!

I breastfed until mine were about 6 months old. To be honest I'd had enough by then. You need to decide how much londer you are going to continue to do this.
Sore bitten nipples though can't be healthy for either of you.
This is really for you to decide, depends how much you want to breastfeed.

well I'm assuming from your OP that you do want to continue! mr I don't think that was helpful, if the OP wanted to stop breastfeeding she would just do so, instead of asking for advice.
I think saying a strong "NO" and removing them from the breast works after a couple of days. I also find that the (unintentional) biting happens again when new teeth come through - sorry :)

You're right, sorry that wasn't helpful.

:)

Well thanks a lot. I think teething is a major reason why he is so keen on biting.

I will try to say a strong "NO" and see if it helps! :) ( and pray that it does Hmm)

My DD is only 9mo but nibbles when she's teething. Echo StealthPolarBear's advice.

It isn't actually anything I've tried, another MNer recommended it to me, worked for her I think.
Mine only seem to bite by accident when they;re getting new teeth. DD is 11 months and doesn't bite as such but is very toothy when she feeds :(

I had the same with my two at about this age, it was definitely during teething but I think it's age related too. 'tis bloody awful in any case.

I second (third) Steath, although IME is was necessary to actually put the offending DC (lol) down after saying "NO". Just removing from the breast didn't really help, DD in particular though it was a great game. I felt a bit mean doing it but both MN and my HV advised the same thing Shock so it seemed worth a try. I had to repeat it several times during most feeds but it did work pretty quickly. Worked for the 12 month shoulder biting phase too.

Keep a good eye on him when he's feeding, if your lucky it's sometimes possible to get your little finger between the mouth and the nipple before they nash. You have to be very quick though.
