Two-day-old baby not really interested in breast - when should I get worried?

My DS was born Sunday morn at 2.30 Smile.

He hasn't really fed at all since then (about 36hrs). He'll put his mouth really wide around the nipple but doesn't suck very much.

I have BF'd two babies before (twins) so not really worried right now. I assume he is just a bit mucousy and sleepy. But I wanted to know whether this is OK/normal.

He's had one very good feed (over 10mins) last night but other than that just a couple of minutes every few hours. I am expressing colostrum into his mouth. He slept 1am-6.30am last night and seems very content. We've had lots of dirty nappies. I think he is actually sucking cos my afterpains are horrendous when he is on, he is just not sucking for long.

So should I just keep putting him to the breast and hoping he gets the jist? Or is this something that needs further investigation right now?

Lovely to have a new baby :)

It sounds like you are doing the right things - it's not uncommon for babies to take time out after birth, and things are usually ok, but you can't always be sure.

Would be sensible to ask the midwife's opinion as she can see you, see him and see what he's doing.

It would also be good to keep him close to you, skin to skin, and watch for any slight feeding cues. It's not a good thing to have him sleeping in a crib away from you, your body, your smell, your voice.

Thanks Tiktok Smile

He has just had a really good five-ish mins so hopefully we are getting there.

MW is coming today so I can ask her.

Lots of skin to skin is a good idea I'd not really though of, I will try that. Thanks!

I did skin to skin for an hour yesterday then he had a good feed at 2.30pm, then another at 5pm, 6pm, 6.30 and 10.30 Smile

Lots of feeding through the night too and he is latching on well.

Thanks again for your advice Tiktok.
