Any other black/mixed race women never had a decent haircut?

I am mixed race with 4a hair (don't usually roll with 'hair types' but it's the easiest way to give you a idea). I live in Norfolk, and have never had a decent haircut in my life. Even the curly hair specialists I have been to have left me with an uneven cut or strands that are longer than others. Either this or they recognise that there is a real demand and charge £150 for a dry cut (no products, no washing, just a cut). I have resorted to cutting it myself and am going to attempt some bangs tomorrow (wish me luck!) - figured if it's going to be wonky anyway it may as well be wonky and free! Any other rural folk out there who have never managed to find that one HG hairdresser?

Are you saying you’ve never travelled anywhere outside Norfolk for hairdressing? (I may have misunderstood.)

No, I have travelled to Suffolk, Cambridge and Colchester but all have been a disappointment. I sadly can't afford to travel further than that every time I need a haircut and feel their must be at least one decent hairdresser within 50 miles of me.

I’m white but had a nightmare with hairdressers, so many bad cuts, not knowing how to cut curls or that it needs proper products in (not just a serum) etc etc
thankfully I’ve found my holy grail but he’s in Manchester (Hairking Callum)
there was an Instagram that recommended hairdressers, I’ll have a look

voidcatsarethebest · 30/03/2026 08:41

These are the two I saw recommended

Thanks. Ideally looking for someone who specialises in afro hair.

I know a couple of Black women who travel long distances to a London salon to have their hair done.

Didn't you read the thread title?

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 30/03/2026 09:09

Hmm … 😄 Honestly, even if there is one decent hairdresser within fifty miles, it would be strange to restrict yourself to that single place.

I’m afraid I don’t think you’re being reasonable! The places you mention are exactly the areas where I would not expect to find a suitable hairdresser (though I would hope Cambridge offers more than it did 40 years ago) - so in your shoes I would be looking further afield. Probably London. I’m not saying you should be travelling every week, or month. But it’s not unreasonable to prioritise saving up for a hairdressing trip maybe twice a year, if your hair matters to you.

Clearly not. The afro haircuts on the pages linked look substandard compared to the curly ones. No layers at all. They look awful.

Apologies. I have very curly hair because of my black ancestry so thought I could post. I describe myself as white because it’s too far back and complicated. I’ll leave

Mildorado · 30/03/2026 10:37

I agree, it's an absolute pain. Also very expensive. How far are you prepared to travel?.

WhitebaitLane · 30/03/2026 11:17

I’m type 3b. One DC is also 3b and the other 4a.

I just do it at home with hair scissors. Even the hairdressers in London i looked into have mixed reviews. They might do type 3, but they won’t know how to do type 4.

This is what I mean it's just like nobody can do it. There must be someone tried and tested! I'd be willing to travel anywhere i can drive to within a couple of hours.

Frustrating. My sister used to live near Chelmsford and got hers done locally, so I'll ask her, that may be within travelling distance?

Hi @PeachesAndParma , she says it's the Nubian Hair Salon. The hairdresser she used has left, but she says that it's rated well. I'll pass on the phone number when she sends it.

This chap is great, but a bit of a trek for you! https://www.instagram.com/hairkingcallum?igsh=YXBlb29qM3B0czU0

I feel your pain - the struggle is real!

My hairdresser retired 5 years ago. I haven't had a cut or trim since. It takes so long to grow, it traumatises me to see it trimmed, especially if it is a bad cut. I am that stereotype 😂

Oh my god. I once put my hair in a wrap for 2 months for that very reason!
My hair takes ages to grow.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 04/04/2026 13:22

You unfortunately probably need to go to London.

I’m in the SE but my hair is 4c, so isn’t really cut (occasionally trimmed but the lady who braids my hair will do that but she doesn’t do cuts- comes to my house). DC have a different mobile hairdresser but they are mixed; she is white but does an amazing cut, they saw several different hairdressers (black and white) before I was happy.

Trial and error, word of mouth and lots of online research. Agree, it shouldn’t be so difficult.

LassiKopiano24 · 05/04/2026 10:42

My mum is mixed race and often has to travel into London for her hair appointments as she can never find anyone decent localish to her. Maybe ask around on some local FB groups if you haven’t already?

If you use TikTok, HairkingCallum has a page which shows all the different hair types he works with including black and mixed race hair types. I’m mixed and would consider him if I was more local.

Genxhausted · 06/04/2026 15:35

I'm mixed and the last time I let a hairdresser near my hair i lost half to breakage! Before then I hadn't allowed a hairdresser near my hair in ten years. Even in London they treated my hair as black not mixed. White people do not understand that a bad haircut is something I have to live with for years not weeks!!!! I just do it myself now.
