I am white and my husband is black. We have 2 sons. My eldest son is at uni in Sheffield and I am frightened. I've pleaded with him to work from home rather than use the uni library right now.

I know if I post in the main mumsnet section I'll be told I'm ridiculous, people aren't racist, the UK doesn't have a problem, blah blah blah but I'm NOT. People ARE and the UK HAS!

I feel that my family is less safe here than I ever thought possible and me and my husband don't know what best to say to our children.

I would just like to say to any other white people who might read this, if you want to post to tell me that it's not a problem and I'm seeing things that aren't there and my sons are safe etc, don't bother. I don't want to hear white denial of racism and threats, I really don't and if that sounds aggressive, that's just tough.

I think that Reugny is right.

Me too. It's simply not worth the risk.

No, it really is not@IncompleteSenten . I hope that you, and your family are not getting too stressed out with all that is happening.

I also think there are people who live in overwhelmingly white areas who believe it doesn't happen because they don't see it on their doorstep or on the front page of their local paper. Bluntly, they only know white people and never hear first hand experiences of racism. They live in nice little bubbles of comfortable ignorance, and they're very happy with that.

I've just cancelled plans with a friend because of planned violence in her town. She replied to say how shocked she was as she hadn't heard anything about "all this" since last week.

One of my white friends glibby suggested a weekend away to get out of city this weekend. Must be nice to so unaffected that this seems like a good idea..

How do you remain friends with someone so ignorant?

stronglatte · 07/08/2024 19:58

Massive protests in Bristol but ALL anti racist protestors - not one EDL or racists out ! Huge crowds of peace marchers. Presenter just said it's not a counter protest because no protest to counter. Fingers crossed the nazis stay away

Simonjt · 07/08/2024 20:06

It did look like the peaceful counter protestors in Nottingham and Sheffield are what led to the racists going home, I guess due to the sheer number of them.

It was the same in Leeds. They were outnumbered and skulked away.

Sorry to be ignorant but why is that such a bad suggestion? My DH is Asian and also suggested getting out of the city because he thought it would be safer and less trouble. I can also understand that staying in a multicultural city might be better.
