What nice things do you do for yourself?

As the title says...Recently been through quite a bit so promised myself now I feel I'm coming out the other side to do nice things for myself.

On a Saturday morning before I go for the food shop I pop into a local bakery and have a freshly baked pastry and a hot chocolate and listen to a podcast. Nothing flashy but makes such a difference.

What nice things do you do for yourself?

I cook something delicious and unusual on the weekends

HappyMuma · 19/07/2024 14:29

Have a soak in the bath. Take a nice long walk. Just recently realised how much I enjoy painting my nails!! And one that’s technically for the family but it makes me happy, making something delicious and over the top for lunch at the weekend, scones, cakes, pastries, all home made.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 19/07/2024 17:08

Ooh sounds lovely both of you. I'm currently at the beach. Took a taxi to my husbands work and surprised him with sandwiches and his favourite sausage rolls. It's empty and the sun is out...perfect combination. Not even the seagulls can spoil this Smile

That's a plan this year to start having lovely baths with candles I usually just have showers but was given a lovely bath oil set I'm yet to try. To cook more is another one, a friend bought me a Caribbean cookbook at Christmas and has the all recipes from my childhood but still haven't got round to trying it out.

I can imagine the recipes in that cookbook!! Enjoy!

halava · 19/07/2024 17:17

Early night with either a good book, Netflix or my favourite podcast. No interruptions thanks.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 19/07/2024 21:34

@HappyMuma it's brilliant so many recipes it's called Motherland by Melissa Thompson highly recommend it.

@halava love a good book 😊

Starterlocs · 19/07/2024 22:02

I like the Motherland book too, also And it's Pepperpot Diaries.

I also like grabbing a good pastry or cake with a decent cup of coffee when I can.

Once or twice I've done a spa day to really mark the end of something big.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 19/07/2024 23:50

@WarrenSpeck what do you like cooking? Im loving experimenting with fusing flavours together. I tried an 8 hour slow cooked oxtail noodle stir fry the other day and it was so good!!

That sounds fabulous! If you're planning to do it in London, let me know where and how it goes. Hubby and I very much overdue a mini getaway and I'd be looking to spend similar amount!

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 20/07/2024 11:37

@Starterlocs will do...we are hoping for London as we want to do some extra tourist bits whilst there, we know it's gonna be more than £650 bit just don't care need to reset Smile

Lovely beach photo!

Under the nothing flashy but makes such a difference heading - my coffee bean subscription. (I’d say it’s a tiny thing but have realised that over a year it costs almost as much as a spa weekend …)

I love the weekly ritual of a new bag arriving on Saturday mornings - and the daily grinding by hand and single cup coffee filter interlude is absolutely the most crucial part of every day. And the thing I miss most if I’m away from home and haven’t taken all my accoutrements with me.

(In the past few weeks I’ve been watching Top Boy for the first time, from the beginning. It made me smile when one of the main characters returns from a stint in the land of Blue Mountain coffee and has to stand waiting for an eternity in a London coffee shop while some ponytailed youth grinds and measures and tips and weighs and genuflects and milks the cow and gives a lecture and repeats the whole process three times before finally handing over the takeaway cup …)

Maggiethecat · 22/07/2024 18:03

@BetsyRegards -😂

I think wish I could drink coffee just to try Blue Mountain! I may one day risk the palpitations.

Been going to the allotment even if I end up cursing the slugs.

It’s generally very relaxing though and has spectacular views of the sea. My favourite place at the moment and if I come away with a few strawberries or salad leaves I feel very blessed.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 23/07/2024 22:45

@Maggiethecat

Even though I don't drink coffee I would love to try blue mountain.

I had a random moment and bought some strawberry seeds to plant...I'm not that great with nature but thought this would be a small way to start Smile

@Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles - fabulous! come back to tell us about them.

holtol · 24/07/2024 07:07

I go to the gym. It started off as a bit of a chore but now I love it, it's just for me and it's time I now guard as I notice the difference in my wellbeing when I don't go.

What a lovely idea for a thread. Simple pleasures are the best.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 24/07/2024 11:54

@holtol this is in my top 5 of things to do. I've started working on getting my health in order, started with food and really focusing on cooking from scratch more which I'm enjoying.

I'm fed up of the nastiness I'm seeing on other threads just brings you down so decided to have something nice. I'm also looking for ideas to try. It's nice to hear everyone's little things they do and reminds me I don't need to spend silly amounts each time I want to do something.

@Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles - 8 hour slow cooked oxtail noodle stir fry! sounds heavenly.

I rarely do oxtail as it takes so long to cook if not using a pressure cooker.

Going to get Motherland - I’ve been using Enid Donaldsons for all my adult life 😂

Starseeking · 28/07/2024 22:32

I do a weekly 90 minute hot yoga class. No distractions, no DC, no work, just me and the heat pushing my body to its limit. I feel alive afterwards, and it never fails to lift whatever mood I'm in.

On occasion, I also go for spa days, go for a quick massage, or get a manicure and pedicure together if I'm feeling fancy.

Never tried hot yoga but is on my list of things to try. It's recently started at the gym/spa near me.

@Maggiethecat I've added her eyecups for book to my list for my next pay day I'm ashamed to say I didn't know who that was.
