Hello

Are there any black families with children at Barton Court, Grammar School in Canterbury?

I recently went to an open day there, and of all the children that were speaking on the stage none were of colour. The only children of colour I saw were outside under the canopies ready to help families visiting in the school. I personally didn’t see any children of colour leading the tours, although I’m sure there must’ve been some.

I didn’t see any black staff members and only a few mixed and black families viewing the school.

thanks guys

You mis-read my message!!
At no point did I state I wanted my child to only be surrounded by black families. I also did not state I was worried about my child being around white people. I want a multicultural environment that reflects my child’s black AND white family!

I might be a bit out of touch as my DDs finished school over a year ago, but the area in general is not particularly diverse. However, notwithstanding that, I would say that the grammar schools are definitely more diverse than the comprehensives in the area. The Langton’s possibly more so than Barton Court tbh. As are the Independent schools in Canterbury. Are you local or applying from out of county?

Out of county at the moment but planning on moving when we find the right school.

Woah! Someone is defensive (and offensive)! At no point did OP say that they need to ONLY be around black people. This is a perfectly legitimate concern for this parent and they are well within their rights to ask the question. Good luck OP, I'm not in the area but I hope everything works out for you.

Thank you 🙏

Ah, ok so, presumably you’re not that familiar with the area then. So, as I said, not hugely diverse but the Grammars would be more diverse than the Comps. If you’re interested in the area, I’d definitely urge you to consider the Langton’s - a much more rounded offering imo, but they are single sex. Are you also considering Independent schools or just state Grammars?

askingneverhurt · 20/10/2023 18:14

Hi

we are looking at both independent and grammar. We don’t really want single sex schools.
