Another thing that isn't surprising in the NHS

This was first pointed out back in the 80s and it appears nothing has changed.

It seems extraordinary to me that things I have personally known for half a century are only just being ‘discovered’ by the State.

Outrageous. It's time to defund this racist institution and go private.

Everyone knows this without having a study commissioned but hopefully this was done so formal action to effect change can be taken.

All this will do is increase health inequalities.

A race to the bottom will not help. We need to improve things. How? I don't know.

This issue was/ is obvious, but now we have a study to confirm it.

Going privately for medical treatments is a thing I can't afford and on principle disagree with; as the astronomical bills paid in the USA for even just being seated in the waiting room are becoming the norm
If I'm not happy with whats going on when I attend an appointment I let them know
that as a black woman I expected/felt I should've got better?
I'm not afraid to ask questions either; as that's my perogative and It's my body
I'm sure you'd get racists in the private sector too; it's just your money will talk
But still, I understand, what with waiting lists and if you've something truly serious to contend with you'd want immediate action
An essential pot luck bag for many flavoured with racism is what the NHS now is unfortunately.

Do we really want to see the return of various diseases because people just can't afford to vaccinate their children/babies?
And I know its not great now
But no prenatal care/possible cesarean /post natal care unless you can afford it?
With there being so many other medical scenarios to go wrong?
Just look across the pond how they've handled private pay healthcare there ......

It's insane and it's not just in nursing. I remember being constantly irritated when I lived in wandsworth - supermarket tellers were, on average, more often black than any other race. And yet, management.... all white. Every. Single. Time.

My midwife when DD was born was from Ghana, lived in the UK for 20 years and spent 3 months a year training midwives back in her home country. She was temporary staff at my hospital.

She was convinced there ws something wrong. Pressed red button. Everyone came in. After a while, decided there wasn't. She wasn't having any of it and pressed the red button again. This time a doctor came too and examined me. DD was born by emergency c section a frighteningly short time after - with the doctor telling everyone to hurry up every minute or two. She was the only nurse/midwife I saw over my entire time in that hospital (I was there for 4 days) who wasn't white. And she saved my baby - but she had to fight to do it.

It's amazing that how anybody black is seen as dumb and never taken seriously.....
Sisters friend parents were part of a heart surgery team in an Essex hospital where Head Surgeon was a Srilankan gentleman who'd gone to Winchester Boys School and ended up being top in his medicinal field
One day a white man had massive heart attack was admitted
Bed rested for 2/3 weeks
Then was due to be operated on
Eve of operation surgeon visited him to talk procedure
Man assumed a white surgeon would be working on him and made it clear he'd put up with enough black in the hospital and didn't want black hands inside him
Surgeon explained apart from someone else in a northern hospital there was nobody else
As the next batch of possible surgeons would take a minimum of 3 years (I think?) To train up and without op he'd be soon dead
Next morning he signed release forms and left
Without acknowledgement of fact to any black/brown staff there he'd been nasty to as they tended to him
Painfully died within the month 🫤.

@QueenietheGreat what a sad story. For all involved.

On a lighter note, I have always wished I could track down the Sri Lankan doctor who had examined me 2 days earlier. A) it was the least painful and uncomfortable internal exam of my life and b) he felt there was something wrong. He was a very junior doctor and when he called the consultant late on the saturday night to ask to do a c section, they said no.

Eta maybe not so light. I always assumed it was his junior status that meant they ignored his instincts but maybe not....? As the top consultants around here are mostly of SE Asian descent, racism didnt cross my mind but....?!

I now sadly
Always assume that because of entrenched assumptions held by those supposedly in the know
Something, if anything that happens may not be to my favour
We did and are still living very long days...........
