A black owned social media channel

The plaster thread and MNHQ questionable moderation policy has left quite a mark in my soul. I’ve approached mumsnet for a discussion on their moderation policy, their conduct and how they see their responsibility as the owner of this platform. I’m anticipating a response.
I wonder if there would be an interest from POC in a black owned social media engagement forum? I’m not black so wouldn’t be the right person to drive this but I discussed with my friends and family who are and they were interested in taking it forward and would have the skills and backgrounds to do it. We were just interested to see if there would amongst those group be hypothetically speaking an interest in that type of community engagement?

Is the link and the screen shot of my most recent post.

Tbh I was naive to think an AIBU about faith was going to go well. I’ve reported 3 different posters for belittling the beliefs of others and got the bog standard “we’re looking into it” tripe. I’ve reported a fourth poster for being racist. Although I did defend one early on as I didn’t believe their post was racist. All posts still stand.

It just really, really irks me that the derogatory comments towards any faith group whether Jews, Muslims, Christians is allowed to stand. It’s the same for attitudes towards BAME people. As a MR Christian woman I’m thoroughly fed up with it from all angles.

I’m now of the “stay and fight” group though so I keep reporting, keep mentioning to mnhq. In my previous life, I would have left it alone and just wanted a quiet life.

I’ve got two massive work reports to write over the next two weeks. Once they’re completed, I’m going to look much more closely at the advertisers on here, the sponsored product tests etc. I will be boycotting their products and writing to them. @Lndnmummy has inspired me to put on my big girl pants ( snd mine are v big!) and pick up my pen!

A black owned social media channel

Not quite a social media channel but Black Ballad is a Black owned platform for news/stories by and for Black women. I canr afford to take part in the crowdfunding at the moment but I have signed up to the website. It was only £24 for 12 months (promo code MAY21). I want to put more of my money in these type of platforms as I dont think the mainstream outlets are doing much for or to protect me (in the face of racism). As much I enjoy mumsnet, sometimes I read comments that are slyly laced in racism and it does make me uncomfortable, so yes! I want to find more things like Black Ballad to support.

Hi @Lndnmummy and everyone in this favulous thread. I agree with everyting you are all saying. I took some time away from BMN as the threads and responses laced in racism, with stupid offensive quips cloaked in faux innocence were getting to me, as I felt I had to say something. That plaster thread was incendiary and a deliberate attack.

Reporting is pointless at times as unless you put the effort of writing a uni level paper, complete with references and examples on why the post is racist, it is left to stand.

Thank you all for all your efforts to change things. Don't forget to take time out for yourselves.

RedMarauder · 06/06/2021 10:40

Just a warning MN will probably remove this thread using the excuse it has links to other threads so breaches their posting guidelines, rather than address the issues over their lack of moderation for racism, religious hatred and both e.g. anti-Semitism this thread is highlighting.

Lndnmummy · 16/06/2021 19:10

Just saw that the plaster thread has been pulled before I managed to grab the screenshots. If anyone managed to grab them I’d really appreciate it. I’ve been mostly offline for a while as my mental health needed a respite.

Interesting. A white woman wanting to lead the way on behalf of black women.

Why2why · 21/08/2021 07:21

I am very happy to join boycotting the advertisers products and writing to them to explain why. Also very happy to raise awareness amongst friends and family to do the same. Perhaps this is what is needed rather than a black owned social media platform. Black people should not have to put up with being excluded or abused on “mainstream” media platforms.

Why2why · 23/08/2021 18:53

I’ve been contributing to a thread on The Royal Family area. It’s the typical hating on Harry and Meghan Markle. I noted with interest that those called out for their hate complained to Mumsnet who were quick to issue a warning about poster seeking to chase off differing opinions. All very strange and questionable.

I was reminded by this post where it was flagged that Mumsnet does not approach concerns about racism with the same quickness and vigour.

This is such a racist hotbed. The only person of colour forum I know is indiaforums & despite it being aimed at Indian residents the mods are really quick at shutting down racism. MN, I think, is institutionally racist.

I hadn’t appreciated this but it is very clear. I will be visiting Indiaforums because I can’t abide this.

It’s such a shame but we will have to vote with our feet.

Assuming this is directed at me. How am I wanting to lead the way on behalf of anyone? Could you clarify?

It doesn’t matter to me. Your family is black and mixed race so you are not some random person jumping in.

Lead the way. I care not about the colour of your skin. Only the outcome. The fight against injustice is not restricted by skin colour.

emuloc · 23/08/2021 20:20

Well said Why2Why. It matters not to me either. Lndnmummy has felt the sting of racism. She understands what black people are up against.
