Black Mumsnetters
Why do we not just have a site for black women instead 🤔
Sunshine08 · 18/03/2021 21:59
Evening ladies.
I haven’t been on this site since my DS was an infant which is some years ago. I didn’t even realise there was a section dedicated to black women, when did this happen?
Anyway, whilst I think it is important to have a forum where we can discuss topics relating to black women, I am wondering why we have a section on mumsnet and not just our own site.
If this has been discussed before I apologise as I haven’t looked through all of the threads.

Welcome. This board has been running a while now. Originally, it was requested by members already here.
BMN is dedicated to issues that affect Black women as you will see. But other matters affect us too, children, relationship issues, fashion, general talk, gardening, finance, and all the other boards here. It's good to talk more widely too. We don't just stay locked in on this board.
We are all very different as individuals. I'm sure there are BMN already on other forums dedicated to Black people. I've tried one closed site, but felt that it was not for me. I like it here ( most days ....ha ha)
I hope that helps to answer your question?
Perhaps have a look round the threads here.

BMN was created in about September last year, following a campaign led by a poster called Patricksrum.
I like BMN, it's just one of a number of online resources I use to engage with other Black women. There are already numerous sites which cater specifically for Black women, however there's nothing stopping us from using those as well as here.

Someone would have to set it up and moderate it, and put up with everyone kicking off when they don’t agree with the moderation decisions, and that’s a lot of work and stress.

Not my place to post here but OP if you're just back why not give the topic a try?
I followed and commented on the threads around setting it up and the perseverance in the face of loads of racism and anger was incredible.
Setting up sites takes a lot of work and time. And is fraught. And you have to get people posting. As a PP mentioned, if you would like a different site then go for it.
I don't understand why you're so down on it when you've not given it a go. And really it was a hell of a fight to get it.
There is room for this topic and another site if you want to do that.

@NiceGerbil your sisterhood in the face of all that racist opposition was incredible. I remember it well. Thank you for your support.

Lipstick alley is that site you're looking for but it's centred on African American women. My wife prefers it and she posts there but lurks here. If you want a more authentically black womens' forum space then that's your best bet, especially for the more lighthearted stuff like celebrity gossip.
Reddit has a subreddit for pretty much every group but that site is basically the white (American) male version of mumsnet. Women's spaces often get brigaded the way WW do on BMNs. But Reddit is good as a starting point for chat about niche interests.
There's a few black male sites which are alright but they're also America centred. WSHH and SOHH were the OGs, then came the Coli, and then Boxden.
And then there's black twitter...
@starseeking can you please name a few?
Thanks
The majority that I see are created as Facebook groups which I frequent, though obviously members don't have the benefit of anonymity. If you do a search there, lots will come up.
Outside of Facebook, the ones I can think of off the top of my head (though possibly US focussed rather than UK) include:
- Lipstick Alley
- The Shade Room
- The Black Women's Forum

Snap @SkedaddIe. I thought I had posted my message this morning, came back and saw it was still in draft on my phone and realised I hadn't!

This site is great. So glad I came across this. Wish we had a site dedicated also.
