Top quality wigs for black women

I've given up on black hairdressers in this country. You'd think they would have improved over the past 5/10 years, but I'm still shocked at how bad they still are. From customer service to the actual craft itself, they should be ashamed really. I've decided to try wigs, but I don't want bad quality. Browsing the internet hasn't filled me with confidence, but the high quality ones must be out there somewhere. Any advice ladies?? Btw, I want natural hair

Hi I’m surprised you cannot find a decent hairdressers. I’m in Yorkshire and there’s a few decent hair salons here that I have been using.

I’ve order hair from Ali express (read reviews). Then I usually ask my hairdresser to make me a wig for a more natural look rather than a ready made wig bought online.

What's your price range?

Do you want to make your wigs or buy one then fix it to suit you?

I concur with previous poster, allipress is really good. Just make sure the reviews are over 1000. Plus lots of bought items. Don't spend under £50 for hair more that 12inches. Hair from £140 upwards can be really good but you still have to style it. Learn the terms and know what you want before ordering rage 4×4 , 3×4, lace ,no lace full, half, density (more than 180 is always better. 200 plus can be heavy but last longer becuase shading hair)

However, you may also want to consider wether you want the hair ethically sourced. That is a difficult one with Aliexpress I think.

There are some that go for £450+ which are really good and uk based.

Thanks so much for all the info. I've never purchased/worn a wig before and am totally ignorant about how to go about it. I definitely want to buy one that's already made, I definitely don't have the skills to make one. Or the patience..... Hahaha!!! Again, thanks for all your help.

You'll be surprised. I'm in Greater London and with the exception of one woman who no longer does the job, pretty much all my experiences have been pretty terrible. The problem is down here there's no regulating the business so most of the people who own the shops don't have any actual training or skill and there're loads of them. The fact that there are loads of them isn't necessarily a good thing. To get to the really good ones I would have to travel into central London which was more often than not, really inconvenient. Not to mention the buggers wanted paying for ruining your hair.

If you want to invest in quality. Google Chrissybales you can also follow her on social media. Her wigs look fantastic I have been following her for some time now and people fly from around the world to have their wigs done by her.

debbrianna · 11/04/2021 18:43

I will add this link here. Great hair especially if you want to make your own. Reasonable prices. www.annahair.co.uk/

Roseytree · 15/04/2021 17:15

Agree with you re black hairdressers, it’s a real shame. I really wouldn’t recommend Chrissy Bales, know of people who have had poor experiences.

I guess it depends on location. Where I am the best real hair wigs for anyone (black or not) come from or via black hairdressers.
debbrianna · 15/04/2021 22:53

I sometimes make my own. Which is cheaper but better quality when you buy bundles with the closure. Most closures and be reused a few times. cuts out all the waiting times at the hair dressers. Black hair dressers' days are numbered and I hope they don't become a dying business.

Have you considered a mobile hairdresser??

Keepthepeace82 · 23/04/2021 11:58

I'm based over in Watford and travel to My Hair Bar in London. They are based on Warren Street and are pretty easy to get to and do a great job - they also make wigs too.

I know them. I walked past them about a weeks ago and it made me really happy 😊 I didn't know they were there.
Bul21ia · 24/04/2021 20:36

@Gogetsalife

Why do you want a wig? Have you irreparably damaged your hair or are there medical reasons? Just wondering why wearing your own hair as it is isn’t an option. I have never worn a wig (apart from for fancy dress) so genuine question.
I don’t know about OP and her reason for wearing a wig. But black hair (Afro will break if you straighten it daily and it’s time consuming to style) for me personally. When I do straighten my natural hair it instantly will go curly and shrink if it rains. You cannot achieve the same look as a wig no where near.

I have been trying to wear my natural hair out as I want it to grow but I have recently started using clip ins as I miss having the length.

People should be entitled to wear whatever in the hair just like non ethic people without question.

Delectable · 07/06/2021 14:15

Black hair dressers should be on the list of occupation shortages just like Asian cooks! Simple customer care would go a long way.

doesparentingsuck · 07/07/2021 08:35

@Roseytree do you know what happened? I got one from her and would highly recommend - looking to purchase another

Heiferr · 07/07/2021 19:42

I'm eying up one from www.ginaknightwigdesign.co.uk/

londonscalling · 13/07/2021 10:20

Like a previous poster, my daughter has also bought wigs from Ali Express. She has only brought ones made of real hair (Brazilian I think). They are reasonably
priced and she's been happy with them. And yes, check out the reviews for the individual wigs.

Atwitsender · 15/01/2025 12:38

Any updates on Good Wigs for black/mixed race women?
recently lost most of my hair and need to buy a good curly hair wig asap 🥺

Try Ali express. Or get 1 made you would have to go and buy human hair from a black hair shop and find a wig maker. Good quality hair lasts.

Keepthepeace82 · 18/01/2025 18:31

Depending on how much you want to spend, try Chrissy Bales. She does get wigs but they are expensive
