Black Princess party

So my daughter turned 6 on Boxing Day. It’s always a struggle to sort out a celebration for her in and amongst all the Christmas madness, and this year was of course even harder.

I planned to do a tea party with a couple of school friends in her bubble and wanted to organise a virtual visit from a black princess/Princess Tiana. Scoured the internet and called a couple of ‘princess appearance’ companies, but not even one offered this in South Hertfordshire/North London where we are based.

I carried on digging and eventually came across Black Princess Parties DMV - based in Washington DC!! The plan was for her to appear via Zoom as Elsa (she looks amazing as Elsa), do a craft activity with the girls and sing Happy Birthday and a song from the movie. All very exciting. Then tier 4 happened and I had to postpone but she was still able to do a personalised message for my daughter for her big day - she has a musical theatre background and has an amazing voice.

Anyway, since I struggled to find this and thought other Black Mumsnetters might be interested in something like this, thought I’d come on and mention her. Don’t think I’m allowed to share a link?

True
Back on topic, a feisty black princess was Mkabayi kaJama of the Zulu. She was actually regent of the Zulu Kingdom for a time.

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/01/2021 10:29

A little African princess was born on 20th Oct 2020 to the King(Oba) Eware 11 and Queen Owamagbe of Benin.

Another Benin princess, Wuraola Otiti Zynab was married to a king in 2016, but is now divorced. She is very glamorous and spends a lot of time in Dubai.

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/01/2021 10:33

And Ethiopia has its own Meghan Markle. Ethiopian Prince Joel Markonen married an American woman he met in a night club, Ariana Austin.

I love the fact that they met in a nightclub! Grin

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/01/2021 11:16

It’s a modern day fairy tale. And he didn’t tell her he was a prince either until they were talking marriage. She thought he was a regular joe. Not a rich prince with Swiss bank accounts.

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 18:24

If you are not African I am not interested in your thoughts or research about African history. In other words mind your own business regarding your own history, thank you.

I do notice that everything on black mumsnet goes off topic once some entitled individuals of another race cross their boundaries and think they can tell black minds how to think, what to believe and what their history is base on what their history tells them about us.

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 18:36

What do you know about African DNA, a race of people who were molded by the creator and have been here since earth was created.
What do you know about African DNA with your 2000yrs European DNA.

bluebluezoo · 24/01/2021 18:42

“Little first world minds” is pretty offensive

This. I was about to say you had a point until that comment.

African history is rich and amazing. It doesn’t need snidey little comments putting other cultures down in order to rise.

partyatthepalace · 24/01/2021 18:47

Was going to say I sort of think it’s great, but would really rather not have princess role models of any sort, but I didn’t want to kill a fun thread.. but I see someone already did that..

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 18:49

Not directed @PlanDeRaccordement,
But to those who can't bare anything good to be said about African people because all their life they have been a golden child and told they were the greatest.

GrumpyHoonMain · 24/01/2021 18:51

Even the ancient egyptians considered Nubian (black ethiopian) women the most beautiful in the world. So this idea that the ancient kingdoms of Africa were all middle eastern is offensive. There must have been loads of kingdoms older than egypt and mesopotamia south of ethiopia the ruins just haven’t been found yet.

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 18:53

@bluebluezoo
Great! you worry about other people's culture whilst I worry about my own. I see much work to be done in my own home to be worried of another culture or race. I didnt realize having little minds was a cultural thing,

It was you that said small minds is a first world thing, not me.

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 19:08

In ancient times African people as a whole were called ethiopians, we were not called Africans. So when you read ethiopians they actually mean African people not the Ethiopian nation that exist today.

DivineRoyalty · 24/01/2021 19:09

Bluezoo, I said it but I didnt realize it was a cultural thing.

There was Nubia/Kush in the Sudan that built their own pyramids...and fought wars with the Egyptians.

Ile-Ife in Nigeria was founded in 4th Century BC by the Yorubas.

They’ve found evidence of a large ancient Agrarian civilisation in the Congo DR through satellite imagery all hidden by jungle. Much like the Mayan civilisation in mesoamerica is covered by jungle.

The Senegambian Stones is a small name but refer to over 1000 stone circles in west Africa. 93 are UNESCO sites and while the stones are not big (avg 2m High) and are fairly young 3rd c BC to 16 c AD, it shows a project done for two millennium.

The oldest man made structure in the world is in South Africa called Enkis Calendar or Inzalo Y’langa’, which means ‘Birthplace of the Sun’.It is similar to stone henge in that it is a stone megalith structure but it is dated to an astounding 75,000 years ago...long long before Stone Henge.

@DivineRoyalty. The name Ethiopian was the Greek name for Africans living south of Egypt. It was coined by Herodotus he spelled it Aethiopians and it is Ancient Greek for “burnt face”- a reference to Africans blackness.

Theowawaynow · 25/01/2021 02:26

Well that went wrong fast, go on @partyatthepalace Chuck the feminism peice in and we can see how fast the whole thing implodes? Grin

To OPs actual point, I think that’s a great idea, kids are mixed heritage not black to be fair but I struggle to find them role models “like them” so a great shout to consider.

PlanDeRaccordement · 25/01/2021 02:41

Speaking of Ancient times and black princesses, the Greeks recorded a black princess myth:

Andromeda was a Princess of Ethiopia, whose mother Cassiopeia bragged that she was more beautiful than the Nereids. Now the Nereids were very beautiful sea sprite girls, crowned with branches of red coral and dressed in white silk robes trimmed with gold. They were part of Poseidon's entourage and carried his trident, and one of them, Amphitrite was his wife. This enraged Poseidon’s male pride because how dare a human say her daughter is more beautiful than his wife. So he sent floods to ravage the coasts of Ethiopia. Because the oracle of Ammon says so, poor Andromeda is then chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster Cetus to appease Poseidon.

But she is saved by Perseus who offers to marry her and they fly off on the Pegasus to Argos in Greece and he makes her his queen. Where she becomes great grand mother to Hercules...

This myth is the basis for all European princess and dragon motifs....all copied from a black princess Andromeda’s story.

This thread is really interesting!
Thank you @PlanDeRaccordement. I'd love to know more about the stone circles and ancient cities. Can you recommend any books, or links?

DivineRoyalty · 25/01/2021 08:20

@PlanDeRaccordement
Thank you for your knowledge, very interesting. Let's not forget the igbo people, the asante people, timbuktu, all great civilizations and the list goes on. African people were not swinging on trees until the lighter race came to rescue us😂. It's what they teach our kids in schools and what they want us to believe. We know the truthGrin
Every region in Africa have their own story of civilization though it may not be widely known throughout the world. And they do not forget even if it is a million generations ago. There is a little group of people in these communities who keep these sacred knowledge as they do not want to move on with modern times and forget our ancestors.
