Inspiring Black women

Just that really. I’ve been thinking about which Black women I admire and Sharon White, ex OfCom Chief Exec and current Chairman of John Lewis. Her background doesn’t seem particularly privileged, so it seems that she got to where she is by sheer hard work and determination. Obviously I’m making a lot of assumptions here because I don’t actually know the woman.

Have to say, I disapprove of this concept on principle ... It kind of implies there's only a tiny pool of people to choose from - rather than billions. (Billion and a half, maybe?)

I didn't read it that way at all.

I read it as let's talk about inspirational Black women, rather than let's see if we can spot the only one in the public eye.

Karen Blackett (UK CEO of a media Group) and Bozoma St John (Marketing Exec at Netflix and Uber) are two of my creative sister's inspirations.

Mae Jemison, an inspiring engineer and, of course, Andrea Jenkins.

Dr Yvonne Thompson. She was a speaker at a women's day event i was at some years ago to a crowd of mostly white middle class women and she centered her speech on being a black woman. She wiped the floor with all the other (very good) speakers and handled the signal virtuing (though well meaning) questions from the crowd admirably.

I'm white but from a deprived back ground and while the other speakers were really very good, there wasn't much to relate to. Yvonne was the only one to so much as touch upon intersectionality and the fact that all our experiences as women are different depending on other factors.

I'm hoping to see her on a panel again soon, she was truly inspirational.

Alison Hammond. She's hilarious. Would love to be a little bit more like her 😄
