What are everyone's favourite black toys? I have a few dolls but I'm struggling to find a wider range of different types of toys eg a snakes and ladder board or small plastic figures with a range of skin tones.

Also looking for any film recommendations for a 3 year old. She's watched Moana Princess and the Frog (which I don't care for) and all the cbeebies stuff but I can't find much else.

ThinSlicePizza · 29/09/2020 11:34

LEGO Friends: Girls on a Mission I love watching it with my daughter. the girls are all different.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 29/09/2020 11:36

I hope it is ok for me to recommend here as a white woman but my little girls really like Nella The Princess Knight on Nick Jr (mixed race child, black dad and white mum).

ThinSlicePizza · 29/09/2020 11:40

interestingly, I can't think of any black boy tv characters.

I have mega bloks with brown characters. I was given them by a friend.

RedRumTheHorse · 29/09/2020 12:01

@ThinSlicePizza Upsy Daisy and Bing bunny.

ThinSlicePizza · 29/09/2020 12:12

Is Bing Bunny meant to be black? wow! How?

I had a feeling ZUMA in paw patrol was meant to be black but I can't tell if they were girl or boy. It's one of those characters with little development and no one really likes.

Kanaloa · 29/09/2020 12:13

Oh yes mine used to love Doc McStuffins - not sure if it’s on anymore. Esme & Roy might be an option for cartoons? Also Blaze and the monster machines. I’m not sure about toys, I know baby born does different skin colours and there is a range of girl dolls that also do but I can’t remember their names.

Kanaloa · 29/09/2020 12:16

Also if she likes disney princesses there is a range in the disney store called Disney animators dolls. They definitely to Moana and I think they do Tiana as well.

anxietrist · 29/09/2020 22:16

Motown magic on Netflix?

JayDot500 · 29/09/2020 23:58

@ThinSlicePizza

interestingly, I can't think of any black boy tv characters.
The only one I can think of is AJ from Blaze and the Monster Machines. If anyone hasn't seen it, it's excellent for introducing Physics and engineering concepts to kids.

AJ is a bit of a secondary Character. He's Blaze's (the main monster machine) driver/best friend, and he's also voiced by a black boy. I've two son's, and I definitely think there's more black female characters on TV. My son also watched Nella and Lego Friends, but they're a bit too girl oriented for him to choose it over Fireman Sam, or Paw Patrol.

DeegeeDee · 30/09/2020 09:36

This is really good to have, thanks OP! As others have said, scarcity of boy characters around which needs to change.

Didn't know about the books @DaisyandRoses, will look out for them as he has just gotten into the programme. The song is on a loop in my head these days - sharing with you all so you can join me.

ThinSlicePizza · 30/09/2020 10:08

I will add Shimmer and Shine to the list. Mainly because it's different from the usual shows.
