Parental 'sayings' that you remember

gnomeclan · 17/09/2020 17:28

My Mum used many 'sayings' she used to teach us/keep us in line.
There was, of course, the Biblical 'spare the rod and you spoil the child'
She also had many others like:
cut your suit according to your cloth = live within your means
cow doesn't miss its tail until fly season is here = we don't appreciate something/somebody good until its/they are gone
Any parental homespun philosophy you have found useful in life?

"Too good to be wholesome" aka smiling assassins.

When the river dries,we will know those who were swimming naked.

GreatGatsby212 · 17/09/2020 18:14

" Me and you are not company " when we were giving lip, being too familiar or just plain rude 😄😄

RepDom21 · 17/09/2020 18:33

If you can’t hear you must feel- Grandma’s house

Ablackrussian · 17/09/2020 20:53

"Cows have no business in horseplay."

Don't concern yourself with something that has nothing to do with you.

alittleredhen · 17/09/2020 21:48

Show me your companion and I'll tell you who you are

EchoCardioGran · 17/09/2020 23:12

A big chair doesn't make a king.

SandyY2K · 18/09/2020 18:42

"I sold the mother of the goat you're trying to sell me"

Translation = I know more than you and you can't pull that line with me.

Or I ain't buying your story kid. Grin

EchoCardioGran · 18/09/2020 18:53

@SandyY2K Grin a big wave to you!

Another one..

"You cannot think you could teach a fish to swim."

SoLegendarySoExtra · 18/09/2020 18:54

If you listen to all the noise from crowds in the market, you will come home empty handed.

Meaning: Do your thing, ignore distractions.

vonny63 · 18/09/2020 20:27

Two bull can't rule in one pen.
= Two grown women cannot live in one house.

SandyY2K · 18/09/2020 22:40

@EchoCardioGran

@SandyY2K grin a big wave to you!

And to you 👋🏾 too.

I'm loving some of these sayings. My mum had so many of them.

"Even if you grow as tall as the sky, you are still my child"

Translation = You might tower over me, but you have to do what I tell you.

Sure mum... you'll never know.

I think my mum got a lot of her sayings from my Grandma.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 18/09/2020 23:02

"What pass you never miss you"

= if you sit and watch other people struggle, thinking it will never happen to you, then remember your time will come.

"You don't do, they say you do, you might as well do and done"

= if you're constantly being blamed for something you didn't do, then you might as well do it!

skippy67 · 19/09/2020 15:43

One hand can't clap.
= it takes two to tango/argue.
When you can't hear, you must feel.
Every hoe have dem stick a bush = there's someone for everyone.
Jamaican mum who had a saying for every situation!

creativecringe · 20/09/2020 16:43

Not everyone crying at a funeral is crying for the deceased. Meaning people will always cry for their personal reasons even when they at a funeral.

Ivenamechangedforthis2020 · 26/09/2020 15:49

What’s bitter for the mouth is good for the belly!

maggiethecat · 03/10/2020 13:42

Chicken gillat’n (gallivanting) hawk deh near. Mum always said this. Loosely translates - careful how you mess around as danger awaits.
When trouble tek you pickney shut (shirt) fit yuh
In times of hardship you’ll make do with very little. Very appropriate to the present.
Wheh it mawga (meagre) it pop
Wherever it ends, it ends. Ditto.
I remember saying this to my then 10 year old when we were cooking one day and she asked who Margot was 😂. We still call her Margot occasionally.
