Now that we have our space, and following on from our super secret meeting...

Just kidding Grin

I live in London and I desperately want to buy some BREADFRUIT

Does anybody have any idea where I could look? I doubt it would be available online, it would go bad during shipping Confused

I once bought a piece from Stratford but I haven't seen the stalls come back since Lockdown.

Try Stroud Green road, Finsbury park. N4 3EF

Phoenix21 · 17/09/2020 11:07

Cinnamon food hall in Tottenham?

Phoenix21 · 17/09/2020 11:09

These guys mention breadfruit. They are a wholesaler but I think they also sell direct.

Ah this is right by my old house.

Sobs.

The area I live in now you can't even pick up a mango.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 17/09/2020 11:21

Thank you!! I'm looking at the link now Phoenix.

@PatricksRum I remember the first time my mum saw those boxes of yellow mangoes outside the grocery shops. She bought some and when we got back and she tried them she exploded and said that they taste so much like the ones from back home. She proceeded to give me a lecture about the red and green mangoes and their inferiority 😂. I finally went to Grenada in 2011 and sure enough, the mangoes were AMAZING.

Try green mangoes with salt. Guilty pleasure. It shouldn't be done. Same with pineapples.

PurpleHoodie · 17/09/2020 12:00

The New Covent Garden Market wholesalers will have some.

Some of the traders are doing home deliveries in London (for a minimum spend i.e £25)

South African Indians add salt & chilli powder to green mangoes, pineapples and oranges too. To add extra tanginess for the mangoes, they mix the salt & chilli powder with vinegar.
PurpleHoodie · 17/09/2020 12:33

I tried some Maldon sea salt on fresh cut pineapple once.

Game changer.

Yes, this! Also grapefruit with salt.

You can't get decent pineapple in Europe, though.

Try Brixton Market for breadfruit.

skippy67 · 17/09/2020 13:38

Brixton market for breadfruit. I grew up in Dalston and my mum used to get all the 'hard foods" from Ridley Road market, but I think it's gone all trendy there now...

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 17/09/2020 13:57

Another one for green mangoes and salt.

Absolutely love yellow mangoes, the red and green ones are 🚮 in comparison. Hope you get your breadfruit Meme

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 17/09/2020 14:33

Thank you Dastardly! I have made plans with DM to visit the warehouse on Blackhorse Lane tomorrow. I will return with pictures!! I'm so excited 😆

Blue Mountain Peak in Harlesden? Nearest tube would be Willesden Junction on the Bakerloo line.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 17/09/2020 15:26

Just to double check before I go to Asda, are the green mangoes with salt the same mangoes we can get from the supermarket? Blush

Asking for a friend... of course I would never try something that sounds so delicious unhealthy Grin

I love that so many ppl do this! Green mango + salt or soy sauce or shrimp paste Is my fav (am part Filipino), have seen it in Thailand and apparently it’s also common in Central America (found out from a colleague)
workhomesleeprepeat · 17/09/2020 15:35

@AMemeByAnyOtherName sadly the only green mangoes I’ve found in the UK that are ‘right’ as in very sour we’re from Chinatown in London and super expensive.

But mango salt will kind of work with all underripe mangoes, just give them a little squeeze and pick the hardest one. You want one with no ‘give’ if you see what I mean

And watermelon... with salt and lime. It's so good it should be illegal.
AMemeByAnyOtherName · 17/09/2020 17:52

Omg, well hopefully I’ll find some tomorrow at the Caribbean grocery warehouse! I really my friend really can’t wait!

DeegeeDee · 17/09/2020 20:03

Never tried salt on mangoes, will have to wait until the weekend has just had the last ripe mango. Like you OP, am teaching my husband and son about the 'right' ones. They do give me funny looks but have told them when we go to Jamaica, they will understand. Good luck searching.

PonDeReplay · 17/09/2020 20:16

Green mango with salt, lime and chili pepper is delicious! Haven’t had it in ages.

Phoenix21 · 18/09/2020 07:34

Green mango with salt, limes, chilli... what new sorcery is this! (Adds mangos to online shop)

Let us know how that Blackhorse Road gaff is, I might take a wander over at some point to get my goat booster!

So I went to Sunland Caribbean, but they had closed early. One of the ladies who runs the warehouse was very helpful and even offered to reopen the shop for us, but I said I would come back again another day so she could go home! I had also been emailing them prior to visiting and the response times were quicker than I could even get my head around, like within five minutes fast. They're so friendly. This is a black run business that I truly want to support, so I'm spreading the word! And thanks @Phoenix21 for signposting me there to begin with. You can order online, although she did say to email first if you're not a trader, or if you're London based and can get there easily then you can park outside the warehouse Smile
