Sigh.

Okay, let me just begin with a disclaimer; I don't pretend to know it all. Right now, we have been fortunate enough to witness people of all races band together in solidarity against police brutality, systemic racism, plain ole racism, colourism, and all the other bits that we need to address in society. All for the goal of black people to experience life without the disadvantage we endure due to our skin colour.

So naturally, we are more likely to question things that we used to side eye but do nothing. Okay we'd complain, but usually we'd not take things further. We are lifting ourselves out of the fog of 'status quo' and I'm here for it! Finally.

Today, an woman I know forwarded this message to me. See attached Grin

I feel a growing sense of murky territory evolving around me. Propagated by the forwarding power of our loved ones, are we in "danger" from all of these threats these messages talk of, or are we in danger of becoming too sceptical for our own good?

I want us to be in control of our own businesses, what we eat, what we sign up for, what we put in our hair etc. But I also want us to enjoy healthy attitudes towards... Everything.

This past month, my dad (hypertensive, overweight, diabetic) has decided that Covid is a conspiracy and he'll top up his immune system, go wherever he wants to go, and trust in Jah... Nothing wrong with all of that but can't he exercise a bit of restraint in the current climate? Must it be all or nothing? This is not specifically a black problem, but his was definitely born out of conversations with his peers.

5G is Covid, poisonous garlic, microchips as the mark of the beast... You know what I'm talking about (hopefully). I see all of this interwoven with racism and such, which amplifies the message. Some of these things may be true, what do I know... but when I ask for citation or sources, nothing, or a youtube video. Mostly, the ones who forward this stuff to me won't know where it originated. I had one man's panicked email (sent to me as a screenshot on whatsapp), saying that the gov are going to go into schools and vaccinate black children. We should tell our kids to say no. I had to think about it for a while, then researched the name of the dude who had written it, there's not much available about him, but he seemed to be a public figure of some kind. He even said in his email that he doesn't know the source. But the person who sent it to me really believed it.

I don't want black people to be misinformed, that's my main issue here. Many people I know have already said they're not going to get the vaccine, but not for the reason I'd assumed (too rushed, how do we know it'll work). No, it's because vaccines themselves are all unnecessary and evil. As long as we eat right, and exercise, we will be okay and Covid won't touch us (which is absolutely their right to do, but then I look at my dad and wonder).

So to conclude, I'm a sleep deprived mum so perhaps this isn't the most concise post, so my apologies. I don't want us to trust everything blindly and without question. I encourage it! But sometimes, I just sit and wonder how we balance misinformation/incorrect information with constructive criticism of the status quo to protect our people.

Of course, add your own forwarded messages if you'd like Grin

Am only here for title. I be back 😭😂

I keep getting into rows in one of my WhatsApp group as 2 or 3 women keep posting auntie conspiracies, a few of us dispel with google research then get accused of shutting down information. It’s nuts.

My DH had to have a word with MIL who is hyper religious in addition to believing every bloody conspiracy going. I love my MIL but she doesn’t have my number for this reason Blush

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 16/09/2020 21:13

The WhatsApp aunties and uncles are a menace - I should know my inbox is full of weird videos, articles and stupid threads. I know there is a mistrust of authority given history which is expected, but yeah it goes a step too far. I don't honestly have a solution as they really seem to believe it must be true if if is shared by seemingly sensible people in their WhatsApp prayer group.

I kinda get the vaccine thing as well eugenics and we have often been used as real life guinea pigs for medical procedures and medicines (and it still low key happens). Also those French scientists proclaiming loudly how the vaccine must be tested in Africa as they need it more when Europe had the bulk of world cases at the time really got people's backs up. Why test in a location that isn't a hotspot? And when your history with black people isn't great it immediately translates to "let's see what the side effects are on people we don't care about", esp as the vaccine approval process has been accelerated.

I'm not an anti-vaxxer but I do get the mistrust around it esp with black people. I would say educate, educate and educate but I'm honestly speaking to a brick wall with these WhatsApp aunties, as Auntie Barbara was told by Uncle Ronald who has a friend whose cousin works in A&E so it's true🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️.

No solution OP, just commiserations. Seriously hope your dad reconsiders his stance

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 21:25

My mum is one of those people from the university of whatsup. One benefit has come out of this during lockdown. She found out she does not need to give 10% of her salary to the church. Some pastors can be rapist and also, motto just trust churches. It not worth it travelling south africa or Nigeria to get miracle healing. Hopefully she will come out that revelation postively.

I am hearing less talk about 5g. More vide talks from uncles and aunties about Corona conspiracies.

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 21:28

I haven't had the time to watch the blocked videos about corona on our family group chat. I was constantly getting into arguments.

It was made worse when my cousin was thought to have had corona but then found out she didnt after testing. The way she was treated confirmed it to all the conspiracy loving people in my family that it is a conspiracy.

twilightcafe · 16/09/2020 21:58

Listen, I'm just here for the headline Grin
My mother tells everyone that "she doesnt trust journalists". But swallows every conspiracy theory and WhatsApp bollocks that her friends send her.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 16/09/2020 22:07

Creative do forward the pastor/church nonsense. It has not reached the WhatsApp aunties on my side.

Thankfully my parents are more sensible, but I have blocked one aunt and the rest are soon to follow.

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 22:31

Trust me it probably has reached those aunties. They will think it's a conspiracy from secular countries trying to destroy their belief. Or it can't be their pastor. The horrible ones are corrupted.

I swear, the devil is a liar 🤦‍♀️

Don't even start on prosperity preaching. One of the mum's in the book Americanna goes through this phase and its described so well.

JayDot500 · 16/09/2020 22:49

Omg, the church groups! Now, Everytime one opens there is a stern message that greets everyone, warning them to not share anything that is has nothing to do with religion... And of course, you know one always will and if they're not slapped back quick enough, others will start Grin

Thank you @Dastardlythefriendlymutt. I hope so too. It could be lockdown fatigue and he's a bus driver so feels forced to grin and bare it. I don't want to weaken his resolve but I also don't want him to suffer. He definitely has not yet had it so, who knows. Re the eugenics, I do agree. There are disgusting attitudes from the past and present that we cannot afford to ignore. My perspective of all of this (particularly the Epidemiologic data) is slightly biased because I have studied this at master's level, from a university quite involved with this pandemic here in the UK. As much as politics can skew things, the science is more important. It can be wrong (herd immunity strategy, wtf was that about...), but I can place some faith in it trying to do the right thing.

OP posts:
JayDot500 · 16/09/2020 22:56

@creativecringe I need to read Americanna again for this! (If you meant the Chimamanda book?) I read it in a rush, and can't even remember it. I keep rereading Purple Hibiscus because I just love pacing and detail.... And my mum has actually started asking me to fact check stuff before she forwards stuff en masse. Growth is a thing indeed! At least your mum is less out of pocket now Grin. My MIL forwarded stuff about TB joshua and I was hooked... Not for the reason she probably hoped but omg Grin

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 23:04

TB Joshua apparently has a lot of sex slaves. Lots of rape allegations.

My DH and his sisters had to have "an intervention" with my MIL... Was either that or an eventual 419 because she believed it all, including the competitions and opportunities Grin Grateful it's only religious stuff she forwards now!

That's exactly what I watched!!!! He'd promise women they'd get pregnant by his prayer... Then he'd impregnate them. That man... Angry

alittleredhen · 16/09/2020 23:09

I'm lucky in that my mum a) is generally sensible when it comes to conspiracy theories and b) knows how I feel about unsolicited WhatsApp messages 😑😑😑

On the other hand, my Aunty is due to get blocked. It's well overdue 😒

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 23:11

It is the Chimamanda. Ifemelu's mother and how she struggles with her faith.

Purple hibiscus, I struggled with beatings and the hot water.
Very similar to my sister the serial killer. Brutal but honest.

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 23:14

"an eventual 419" I don't think I am going to even Google this.

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 23:23

It's worse when my mother paid money to visit him. Flew to a foreign country. Thank goodness she took her brother with her. They stopped them entry. Lots of security checks. She came back depressed for months.
I was talking to her about it. She thought it was the devils that stopped her from being seen by the pastor. She now thanks God.after the revelation 😁 she is now trying to deconvert another another uncle who sees TB Joshua like a hero. The uncle is an aspiring pastor.
The saga continues.

creativecringe · 16/09/2020 23:30

"He'd promise women they'd get pregnant by his prayer... Then he'd impregnate them" this very similar to another church in the UK. They used to take women strugling to conceive from UK to pray on the mountain in kenya and they would give birth two months later. Years later reports stated coming out of kenya that they were kidnapping babies from there and bringing them to the uk. Police here got involved. I dont actually know how the case ended. Strange that a whole church of about 2000 two thousand believed this.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 17/09/2020 01:41

You are right OP. The science comes first. I'm sure it's easier for your dad to see it that way as well given just how dangerous his job is. It might actually just be self preservation.

Yes Creative you are right it definitely made rounds this way but the "devil is a liar, not their pastor" 🤣🤣🤣...I can't with these aunties sometimes.

I'm glad your mum is no longer following that horrible man. My friend's mum died of cancer when we were 14 after refusing treatment following his advice after paying thousands of pounds for an audience with him and his prayers - he told her she was healed. She spent all her money trying to get help from him. He disgusts me.

creativecringe · 17/09/2020 09:28

The most recent video in our family group chat is Rachel from dragons den speaks out about corona virus.. It's a must watch, apparently..really tempting to find out the content.

JayDot500 · 17/09/2020 09:40

Oh @creativecringe it does sound like your mum went through a rough time. I'm happy to hear she's over it now!! She's doing well trying to deconvert your uncle. Go mummy! Smile

What do you all think of whatsup being used to groom young Christian followers in the UK?

Reggie Yates touched on this. At the beginning of the year I thought it would be big news but the only people who cared were young black people online. It pissed me off that nothing I'd being done about it.

JayDot500 · 17/09/2020 10:16

@creativecringe I haven't even sniffed anything of this. Is there stuff online about it? I'll look

You look at SPAC Nation. They have disbanded and renamed itself to something else.
