Anyone in Croydon NOT going to Mayday hospital?

I'm only just over 7 weeks pregnant and had my first GP appointment today. She confirmed what I'd already heard - that if you live in the Croydon area you are practically forced to go to Mayday to have your baby.

Well I've already stated that under NO circumstances am I going to Mayday (I'm very keen on a home birth actually but dear husband is against it at present - I'm working on him!).

So assuming that I go to a hospital at all, it will NOT be Mayday. But to achieve this apparently I should start now with writing letters to all and sundry to try to get 'permission' to have my funding transferred elsewhere - i.e. Sutton so I can use St Helier, or Redhill.

Is anyone else in the situation? Has anyone successfully done this and got permission to go elsewhere?

Thanks
Julie

Hi SuMadre/Hanifah,

Was just browsing mumsnet for VBAC advice and came across this old thread!

I'm also expecting my second, I'm 26 weeks today I'm going to attempt VBAC at Mayday... :/

We never did meet after the first ones were born did we?? Are you still around East Croydon? Have you had your 2nd now?

Jo

Hi Jo! Congrats on preg again! How old is he/she now?my ds is 26mths now,my due date was yesterday but no sign of baby yesterday...am also attempting a vbac at mayday...was in the blasted hope ward last week as I fainted they kept me in...I actually discharged myself bcos I was there all nite and day and seen no doc and was in pain and not monitored as usual so I thought whats the point I was told once I got my blood results I would be allowed home...eventually they gave me my results but told me to wait for doc...I waited ages and in the end just left...turns out my iron was low. Went for 40 wk check up yestrday and cervix posterior so couldnt do a sweep I said if I go to 41 weeks I want elective not to be induced...but theyve booked me in 16days after my due date for section...so a bit scared...hoping I will go myself naturally!

fingers crossed for you suMadre, will be interested to know how it goes. Which consultant are you under? Have been seeing Mr Booker (seems very anti VBAC but humouring me). However wrote to head of midwifery and supposed to be meeting with her and Mr Rose who is lead VBAC consultant... no one mentioned he existed before!! Sorry to hear Hope Ward hasn't improved

My son is 23 months, so there will be about the same gap between our kids Are you doing a double buggy? I can't decide!

Yes, I really wouldn't like to be induced :/ A repeat c-section seems the lesser of two evils when you hear how instrumental and episiotomy-tastic inductions tend to turn out

Best of luck with it all, maybe we should meet up at some point?

Hi Jo yes definitely would be nice to meet...if this baby ever comes that is! Am under Mr Booker but have only seen him twice...first appointment was at 32 weeks where he made it clear he is anti vbac (lol) but said I could have a growth scan to see if another big baby...scan showed at 34wks that baby is average size and no probs...altho he stayed transverse or ages...then oblique and finally head down...tho hes still not engaged. After that I seen the registrar and some other docs who wasted my time and basically said Mr Bookers not here and only he can make decision ...strange...then at 38wks seen a female doc who gave me scan and assured me babys head down, average size and was really positive about vbac...and told me that I could wait til 41 wks and then have elective...but when I seen Mr Booker on wed he tried to give me a sweep unsuccessfully...didnt have time to chat...left me with registrar who said his plan was to induce me at 41 wks I said I wanted elective instead and ended up being booked for 42+2...FUMING!!!!Never heard of Mr Rose but Im not going to let them leave me 16days overdue...if baby hasnt come by my next appointment Im going to go crazy until someone books me for cs. Really want it all over with now Im in a daze the last week! Yep still in east croy altho we moved house march 08. Whereabouts r u again? Hope all goes well with urs seems as if u have it planned out properly...I didnt really want to think about it to be honest so the pregnancy just flew until the last 2mths...now its really dragging. This is actually my 3rd pregnancy now as had miscarriage last June...really fed up cos apart from a mths gap where my hormones where all over the place...Ive practically been pregnant for a whole year! Have got a double buggy which dh thinks is a mistake as its not a tandum its one of those side by sides 3 wheelers I love it so nice to push and comfy for babies but gona be hard to go anywhere and definitely wnt b able to get on a bus lol but theres always the tram and after the summer might just use a pushchair with buggyboard!

I can't believe they keep this Mr Rose such a secret! :O It seems crazy that women wanting VBAC at Mayday are put under Booker instead of him when Booker just seems to make everything really difficult. Really sorry to hear about m/c

How big was your first bubs? Mine was 11lbs 4oz and 60cm. So on the big side to say the least! ;) I think the next one is heading that way as his femur length at 22 weeks was on 95th centile... I blame my partner being 6foot2...

Booker couldn't do a sweep on me last time either, my cervix was very posterior but a midwife managed it and 12 hours later I was in labour. See if you can get one of the midwife team to help you.

I'm in Selhurst, just off Sydenham Road so not far from East Croydon! Will send you a message with my contact details

yeah for me it'd be a tandem or nothing, can't get a side by side in the door! ;) Am loathe to spend 600 quid on a phil and ted's although I suspect it may have to happen :/

sneeple · 22/05/2009 20:47

SuMadre I can't message you! can you message me?

suMadre · 23/05/2009 12:41

Hey hun no dont know how to message. R u on facebook by any chance?heres my email [email protected] we can swap telephone no's! WOW 11'4 OH MY GOD no wonder u had a cs...we'll hav to swap stories in detail lol mine was 8'14 and I thought that was huge as neither me nor hub r big. This one seems a LOT smaller but then hes a lot more room to swim around as I didnt get my tummy back lol. Last night had seriously strong contractions was so excited got on the birthing ball...stayed up praying etc...eventually decided as theyre not coming too often I should try reserve my energy and sleep...can only sleep half hr/hr at a time as back in agony & diarrhoea...but I still dont see it turning into proper labor.thinking I probably have to wait til 41 wk check wednesday and see can I have another sweep if nothing happens will try to go gps midwife (only sits on a thurs)just make up an excuse to get appointment lol maybe a midwife might manage it!Phil & teds suppose 2 be great I got mothercare urban detour for 220,they hav sum nice tandems too.do u know yet if ur having boy r girl this time?

sneeple · 23/05/2009 15:24

ack I hope it all kicks off soon for you, waiting around past your due date is rubbish!

We're having another boy! I kind of knew we would be but we found out for definite at the second scan - just needed to know whether I really did need to control my pretty girl clothes urges ;)

I really need to research these tandems, the icandy pear seems to get better all round reviews but is similarly pricy. DS1 has been in a maclaren since birth and I know the cumbersome, over engineered nature of these tandems will do my head in ;)

have emailed you too!

Hi...

With my first child I did not want to go to mayday as i had seen so many of my family member being treated badly in and out of the maternity ward.. at 7 months all i had to do was sign a form and get it faxed over to the hospital i wanted.. (Princess royal farnborough) and within 1-2 weeks i got a booking appointment with them and i was transferred over there! and they were absolutely brilliant, will be going back there without a doubt..!

And the end of the day, its your baby, your body and your choice and no one can make you go anywhere. Im now almost 22 weeks gone and im going to get referred back to farnborough at my next gp app at 28 weeks.. i wud rather have baby at home than mayday lol

lionface · 01/11/2009 21:47

Hi nuttyvixx

that is good to hear that you were able to change hospital from Mayday so easily, I am currently down to go to Mayday, but want to change to St Helier. Do you have to get another scan done, does it also change the midwives you see - my midwife appointments are at my GP and i think they are linked to Mayday?

thanks

liveon · 14/11/2009 20:19

Hey. I am a student nurse. You are able to choose exactly which hospital you want to go to give birth. You just ask your doctor to be referred. If you have a home birth then you have to stick with the nearest hospital to you in case of any complications. Patient choice. Call NHS Direct for further advice.
